When the first inhabitants arrived in Iceland in the late 9th century, there were no horses there. The Vikings brought horses and other domestic animals with them from the areas they came from, especially from Norway but also from the Scottish islands.
Research shows that the Vikings' horses were of different origins and even from different subgroups of Equus caballus. Thus, the kinship with Norwegian horses, originally from northern Eurasia, seems obvious. In particular, the resemblance to the rare Nordland horse (Nordlandshest) is striking and some of these horses also appear to be able to tilt, just like the Icelanders.
Another important ancestor of the icelandic is the Celtic pony, originally taken by the Celts westwards through Europe and thus also to the British Isles. Several breeds of horses in Britain are descended from this ancestor, such as the shetland ponies, the exmoor ponies and also the highland ponies from Scotland.
Glói - an adorable then 11 years old Icelandic horse I also photographed together with his owner a couple of years ago. Sadly, he is no longer alive..
