The Temple of Poseidon on Cape Sounion is believed to have been built between the 5th and the 8th centuries B.C. Poseidon, god of the sea, storms, earthquakes and horses, was as one of the Twelve Olympians, a major deity for ancient Greeks and Athenians, in particular, given the major role that their navy and trade by sea played in their society and economy.
