Sinking of the Fireball... — (FIRST FEBRUARY SUNSET) by СВЕТЛОПИСИ И ХОДОЧАШЋА

Sinking of the Fireball... — (FIRST FEBRUARY SUNSET)

► ▓░█ TAKEN TWO MINUTES BEFORE THE ASTRONOMICAL SUNSET at 17:28 at 243°. This was captured at 17:26:24. The strange color pattern effect of the sinking Sun is not 'manufactured' in post, it is there in the raw file, produced by the lens itself. Behind the Sun, across De Biesbosch nature resort on the horizon, some 240 km from the lens as the crow flies lies Calais guarding the Strait of Dover.

Was it not for this mighty telephoto lens (which I purchased to use in the mountains), I would probably never have payed attention to the life and behavior of birds. A general rule in the Lowlands is that birds get really euphoric at the sunrise and sunset, and very lively during half an hour after the sunset. The seemingly random pattern of the flight that this flock exhibits is not accidental. Nor is it instinctive. It is a pure collective art statement. I have seen it many times – especially crows can perform incredible stunts (these are not the crows but probably geese). I even dare say that those creatures are more receptive of the natural beauty and phenomena than the average humans.

► ▓░█ EVEN THE NATURE IS BEING MINDFULLY REFLECTING the great event to come over a couple of days. On January 6th, – or December 24th according to Julian calendar – the orthodox Christians loyal to their universal, apostolic character, celebrate Christmas Eve throughout the world. Our profound repeated experience is that the nature awaits a week or so after the Western shifted Christmas (as celebrated according to Gregorian calendar), only to start unmistakably showing the real awakening in the days prior to old-calendar old-style orthodox Christmas.

☩Southerner in the North, still dreaming of the Southern Cross... its a Cross to bear. The Northern Cross.⍅

This capture is made 8 minutes before the Airbus A320 from a previous photo (seen high above), will have landed in Munich. The flock of wild geese however flies by, some 45 minutes later in the opposite direction, as if to 'cross the rainbow'. Is that their goal? (Of course, just one soloist goes ⥃opposite direction, the brave ones are always alone!) What could be their goal... what instinct is driving their passage? A rainbow is thrilling to see from the ground, or from an airplane, just imagine how it must be, seen by these birds in their perfectly synchronised free flight. A flight over dense network of high-voltage power lines, high rise erections, transmission towers, radio antennae wiring and other treacherous interfering objects. Using no GPS, no IFR nor ILS, no VOR or beacons, just VFR but no instruments – the formation is ever neatly kept and the goal achieved. Just that we don't know what, why, when and where...

❖ Underexposed ⅔ EV (for the rainbow, not for the birds). Panasonic DC-G90, OM System 12-45mm f/4 at 42mm, stopped down to f/6.3, handheld 1/640 sec., ISO 200. Developed from raw and edited in Affinity Photo 2.4

The Latest Daybreak of the Year by СВЕТЛОПИСИ И ХОДОЧАШЋА

The Latest Daybreak of the Year

► ▓░█ IN QUEST OF THE SUN. The first minute of the day – 2 Jan 2025 07:48 UTC / 08.48 CET (local time). Taken mere seconds after the astronomical sunrise, which in this particular place on the globe on this day is almost the very latest sunrise of the winter (the latest was on December 30th but the difference is just several seconds and all those mornings were totally gloomy ⛆overcast)! Sun rises here at 128°SE, almost exactly as is the flight direction of this Airbus A320 belonging to Aer Lingus. The flight EIN3KM originated in Dublin 59' prior to this capture and will be landing at Munich MUC over 52'. So the pilots in the cockpit at 37.000 ft (11.278 m, which is 2400 m higher than the summit of Mt. Everest) are probably watching the sunrise precisely ahead of them. In spite of the clouds above Germany it is indicated by the sunlit jet trail behind them. Their view of the sun is thus not blocked by the clouds like my view is.

They are flying at 525 kts, so for the crew the scenery must be changing really fast. Having crossed the Irish Sea they encountered Liverpool, then traversing England and crossing the North Sea they reached the Old Continent at Den Hague; then flew over Rotterdam, Dordrecht and Biesbosch. They are above Eindhoven Airport at this moment, ahead of them is not a straight route to Munich but a corridor connecting the airports on route – Cologne, Frankfurt, almost as far as Deggendorf, short of where they initiated a 180° right turn to get back to Munich. This is by and large a car route I often take on my way to south. Just that I need almost the whole day for what they cover in one hour.

I have missed "The [Latest] Daybreak of the Year", sadly no clear sky for weeks in the Lowlands. The cloud front was blocking the sun for me this morning too, but I did make the eye (and lens:) contact with the airplane who was all lit in those first sun rays. The pilots have definitely witnessed this rare sunrise right before them.

Pre-focused on the airliner (back button focus, AFS), geese surprised me and are hence out of focus. Panasonic DC-G90, OM System 12-45mm f/4 at 45mm f/4, 1/1000 sec., ISO 200.

► █░▓ SUNSET LANDING

Cormorants occupy the two most remote bald trees in the nature resort De Avelingen. The once huge colony is shrinking by the day since July. Most of the birds are already gone. Their vulture-like silhouettes on thick bare branches do remind me on Africa.
Captured 9 minutes before the true sunset – but it appears as a real one because behind the trees there is a levee etc. blocking the ideal horizon. In reality, of course, the sun was not banded like the sensor registered it here.

We humans mostly don't even notice a sunsets or sunrises. Some who do, like myself, keep gazing at it, or at best make some snapshots. But the birds live with it. They get agitated or get on the move. During the sunset or just before or just after, the whole clouds of them sometimes move from day pasture to their "bedroom" designations. Some larger species perform incredible maneuvers at landing, making circles, often in groups, like military jet pilots. It's an incredible scene to witness, just that it is exactly the moment of the day when you begin to miss the light to photograph. At least I do with my MFT-size sensor.

Olympus E-M1 (vs.1) with Olympus 75-300mm f4.8-6.7 II, aperture wide open at its longest throw (aperture priority), shutter speed 1/320 sec, ISO 200, 💢HDR 2 handheld, overexposed for ⅔ of a stop. Developed from raw and edited in Affinity Photo 2.0 – again, the sooc jpeg is much sharper. Sharpening eludes me. 👀🆘

Twilight Zone Games

l► █░▓ SUN HAS SET exactly two minutes ago before the moment of this capture, marking the start of civil twilight that on May 20th lasted another 40 minutes until sun sank to 6 degrees below the horizon. This is favorite time for some stunts and flying acrobatics of our feathered friends but I need ISO 4000 to capture that. The sun, now just under the horizon, still manages to pass on its glow over the back of a large cloud front above the North Sea. To the left of the skyline center in a foliage opening perks the church tower of most likely de Hervormde kerk in Molenaarsgraaf, at viewing distance of 10 kilometer. It is being dominated from behind by a major power line transporting electricity from the province of North Brabant via unpopulated Biesbosch to the power-hungry South Holland. Next to the right on the skyline an upper half of the rotating propeller belonging to a wind generator at banks of river De Lek, second largest branch of Rhine.

Wild Geese Grazing (Nature park De Avelingen)

► █░▓ THERE ARE NO COWS, so all the grass is theirs! And they strategically spreаd. This stretch of land next to Boven Merwede river shore is, although cultivated, still protected and essentially a bird sanctuary - even when there are cows, deer, hares and other larger animals roaming over this terrain, the birds still dominate. This shot is taken from the Nieuwe Wolpherensedijk. Minutes into the sunset, the casted shadows become very elongated. The river can still be seen behind the trees, the foliage will soon hide it. Holland has been enjoying an unprecedented period of at least two or even three weeks of perfectly stable clear sunny weather.

I've recently acquired probably the smallest of all 35-100mm mft zooms (full frame equivalent 70-200mm), the Panasonic Lumix f/4.0-5.6 with 46mm filter thread. Expecting nothing much, really. Yet, being an old lens, bought second hand, it performs remarkably well - autofocus is fast and near subjects tack-sharp. The distant objects are not as sharp as with the Olympus plastic fantastic 40-150mm f/4.0-5.6 but I have to run some tests to substantiate this claim. For just under €100, this Lumix was a bargain.

Handheld at its widest, no support. I should have used f/4 or f/4.5 and perhaps ISO 400 to obtain a faster shutter speed. There is slight camera shake here. Developed from RAW in Affinity Photo 1.10.5, additional sharpening in IrfanView 4.59.

My Quest in the Dusk...

...goes on!

► █░▓ WHAT DO the micro-four-thirds and the dusk have in common?
-They both operate in twilight zone and give up on you when the scenery is at its most glorious!
Yet, I'm still trying. This shot is taken almost half an hour after the sunset, thus the only light that there is, comes reflected from the sky. I left the contrast and brightness low as I remember the scene. It would have been easy to lift it in post. On the positive side a common thing that Panasonic bodies seem to have is the monochrome option. It produces a b&w jpeg and a color raw file (if you choose to). But the jpeg machine chooses better values for the b&w than I can do by hand when developing from raw. I tried the G80, also tried the G9, the same thing.

NATURE RESORT Avelingen, Boven-Hardinxveld in the province of South Holland.
This is done with the cheapest Olympus kit zoom, 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 II R at its longest throw (the weakest point of this lens). The sooc jpeg is uncropped and edited in Affinity Photo 1.9.2.

I'm stampolina and I love to take photos of stamps. Thanks for visiting this pages on flickr.

I'm neither a typical collector of stamps, nor a stamp dealer. I'm only a stamp photograph. I'm fascinated of the fine close-up structures which are hidden in this small stamp-pictures. Please don't ask of the worth of these stamps - the most ones have a worth of a few cents or still less.

By the way, I wanna say thank you to all flickr users who have sent me stamps! Great! Thank you! Someone sent me 3 or 5 stamps, another one sent me more than 20 stamps in a letter. It's everytime a great surprise for me and I'm everytime happy to get letters with stamps inside from you!
thx, stampolina

For the case you wanna send also stamps - it is possible. (...I'm pretty sure you'll see these stamps on this photostream on flickr :) thx!

Jabiru mycteria (Flying)

The jabiru (/ˌdʒæbɪˈruː/ or /ˈdʒæbɪruː/; Latin: Jabiru mycteria) is a large stork found in the Americas from Mexico to Argentina, except west of the Andes. It sometimes wanders into the United States, usually in Texas, but has been reported as far north as Mississippi. It is most common in the Pantanal region of Brazil and the Eastern Chaco region of Paraguay. It is the only member of the genus Jabiru. The name comes from a Tupi–Guaraní language and means "swollen neck".
//
