West Coast Motors, West Coast Airplanes.

YT15 AWF is a Scania Irizar coach, owned and operated by West Coast Motors and wearing WCM livery. It is pictured entering and leaving Glasgow International Airport in Renfrew, setting off to Campbeltown working Citylink service 926.

Behind the security fence sit two other west coast natives - G-HEBS, Hebridean Air Services, Britten Norman Islander, based at Oban Airport and used on inter-island services. G-BVVK, Loganair, De Havilland Canada (DHC) 6 Twin Otter, based at Glasgow and used on inter-island services such as Barra, with its sand runway.

In reality, the WCM Irizar is an Oxford Diecast in 1:76. G-HEBS is a 1972 Airfix kit in 1:72, G-BVVK is a Revell kit in 1:72.

I have a long list of models still to be done. Some are resin kit buses, some are code 3 diecast. For those who regularly follow my posts and read this far, here’s a hint for one of my other projects on the go… inter-island, wet.
Here’s another… I’m not done with 1/72 airplanes jet *cough* I mean “yet”.
Aside from creating new models, I also have plans for themed photoshoots.

G-BVVK, Loganair Twin Otter, 1/72 Revell kit. by GlasgowModelVehicles

G-BVVK, Loganair Twin Otter, 1/72 Revell kit.

My second Revell, 1/72 scale, De Havilland Canada (DHC) 6 Twin Otter and my third aircraft kit ever. My intention had only been to have one model plane as close to 1/76 scale as possible and of a Scottish operator. Though while building G-HIAL and seeing that a transfer set was available for Loganair’s standard Tartan livery, I had to build another.

The Twin Otter (“Twotter”), is a high wing, Short Take Off & Landing (STOL), twin turboprop with a tricyclic fixed undercarriage. With 2 flight crew, 0 cabin crew and capacity for 19 passengers, the Twotter has a cruise speed of 172mph and range of 540 miles.

G-BVVK was built in 1980 and arrived with Loganair in December 1994. It has worn British Airways Express and Flybe liveries in that time. Late 2017 would, however, see Loganair regain their own identity rolling out tartan number 11744 as their new livery. And in early 2018, VK received both this new paint job but also the name “Spirit of Eilidh” for Eilidh MacLeod, 14, of Barra - a regular destination for VK - and who was killed in the Manchester Arena attack.

Also included in some pictures are Loganair: G-HIAL, Twin Otter, 1/72 Revell. G-LMRZ, ATR 72-500, 1/100 “snap fit” model. Hebridean Air Services : G-HEBS, BN Islander, 1/72 Airfix.

G-HEBS, 1/72 scale Airfix BN Islander, Hebridean Air Services

I was lucky, very lucky to find and then win this on eBay, I think the last time the kit was released was 2006. This particular kit though, is a 1972 Airfix, 1/72 scale, set of the Britten Norman Islander. The BN Islander, which is still in production, is one of Europe’s best selling commercial aircraft. It is a high wing, Short Take Off & Landing (STOL) plane, with 1 pilot and capacity of 9 passengers, top speed of 170mph, service ceiling of 13,000ft and range of 869 miles.

The Islander is used on the shortest commercial flight in the world, Loganair’s inter-island service linking Westray to Papa Westray (1.7 miles, average flight time 1min30). Additionally the Islander was the fixed wing Scottish Air Ambulance resource before the King Air was tendered for the service.

I have assembled the kit as is, without painting the already yellow plastic - beyond wheels, leading edge slats, and window trims. This lets me display it as G-HEBS (minus the “Hebridean” along the sides), operated by Hebridean Air Services. Hebridean are based at Oban airport and fly to and from; Benbecula, Coll, Colonsay, Islay, Stornoway, Tiree and offer charter, scenic & photography flights. Keeping the model in it’s base colour also allows the possibility of applying Scottish Ambulance transfers, or to fully paint it as either the Westray-Papa Westray Loganair, or perhaps in the orange and white or HM Coastguard - which would get around the lack of models of the Augusta Westland or Sikorsky helicopter types used by HMCG. Time will tell. Very simple little kit.

1/72, Revell Twin Otter, Loganair Saltire Livery, G-HIAL.

This is my first kit aircraft model and I am extremely pleased with how it’s turned out. While I’ve been stripping and repainting diecast models for a while, and have done resin bus models, I’ve never done an Airfix kit or similar. My desire to have model representations of Scottish transport by road, rail, sea and air, led me to the 1/72 Revell kit of the Twin Otter “Twotter”.

The result is G-HIAL in Saltire livery, as operated by Loganair. I added pilots to the cockpit, plus painted a figure into pilots uniform to pose alongside. While I’m sure experienced builders will find faults, I’m so pleased with how it’s turned out that I’ve already got a second kit on the way, and the Loganair Tartan livery transfer set to put on it. As with this model, the Tartan transfer set is from Nazca-decals.

G-HIAL, a Viking DHC-6 Twin Otter is a regular sight on services between Glasgow & Campbeltown, Tiree and Barra. According to a Tom Scott video on Barra Airport, the “big fat tyres” of the Twotter helps with landing on beach runways.
