It's an impressive building but after 55 years I'd expect that its immediate surroundings would be a bit more dressed up.

Funfact: The small commercial building in the foreground was built in 1961.

A 28-story brown zigzag from 1969. by Tim Kiser

A 28-story brown zigzag from 1969.

Here were the Watterson Towers, a residence hall at Illinois State University, said by the university to have "opened in 1968," and said by Wikipedia to have been "completed in 1969," and said by various online sources to have been "completed in 1968" or "opened in 1969."

According to an October 1968 article in the student newspaper, the first five floors were opened to 220 students in the fall of that year, while the remainder of the building continued to be built. According to a December 1969 article in the same newspaper, the "North Tower was due to be finished in September of 1968 and was just completed, and the South Tower was scheduled to completed in September of 1969 but is still not done." So it's possible it wasn't technically "completed in 1969," but I haven't seen any online sources asserting it was "completed in 1970."

Oh look it's one of these.

This was Raleigh N.C.'s longtime "Tower of Lovemaking": Everybody knew what was going on in there.

It was built in 1969 lol. Supposedly it will be demolished at any minute and could be gone by the time you read this. Goodbye!

As of this writing Wikipedia says this was the TALLEST SKYSCRAPER IN ALL RALEIGH from 1969 to 1977, lol can you imagine.

It looks round but it's sixteen-sided at the top, hexadecagonal.

The second-tallest office tower in downtown Topeka has fascinated the people of Kansas since 1969. by Tim Kiser

The second-tallest office tower in downtown Topeka has fascinated the people of Kansas since 1969.

They are delighted by its elegance and awed by its monstrous size. They are proud that something like this could have happened here. Plus there's a parking garage downstairs!

Narrow vertical concrete bands up the sides of the building form short "spires" at their tops, which at least one commentator has called "Gothic-like." Okay!

Subtropical river with plantlife and skyscrapers.

Ah the Hillsborough River. Back in the 1990s when that Sheraton was a Radisson I would rent a room there and chainsmoke til 4 or 5 in the morning, moving back and forth between the air-conditioned room and the hot humid balcony, Winston 100s full flavor. I was so trashy and Tampa was perfect!

In downtown Tampa, Florida, on November 23rd, 2021, the Hillsborough River as viewed from the south side of the Kennedy Boulevard. There is the "Tampa Riverwalk," yonder.

The "Sheraton Tampa Riverwalk" was built in 1969. It has been a Sheraton since October 13th, 2005, what a day. To its right are "100 North Tampa" (built 1992) and "Wells Fargo Center" (built 1985).

In 2018 Lackawanna's dreadful mayor at the time said it is "the ugliest building on planet Earth" and promised to demolish it ("We'll be bringing that down"). I am glad he failed!

Yes I'm enjoying the view of the 24-story 30-sided highrise from over here under this tree!

Yeah it has 10 of the long sides and 20 of the short sides. I used online satellite imagery to count them up. The building is triacontagonal.

I would like to see the building clad in green metal instead of light brown metal.
