Locomotive History
37884 was originally D6883 and was built by English Electric at Robert Stephenson and Hawthorn works, Darlington. It entered traffic in November 1963, allocated to Landore MPD. It would remain at Landore for the next eighteen years (renumbered 37283 under the 1974 TOPS renumbering scheme) before transfer to Scotland in April 1982, allocated initially to Eastfield before moving to Inverness after a couple of weeks. Interestingly in that couple of week period it was recorded still working in South Wales and the transfer to Eastfield was in reality a paper only transfer. It would spend the next six years in Scotland moving to Eastfield in January 1986 and Motherwell in May 1987. In the summer of 1988 it entered Crewe Works for refurbishment and emerged as 37884 in November 1988, allocated to Cardiff. The next twelve years were spent on freight duties through out the UK initially allocated to Cardiff until transferred to Thornaby in May 1992, Toton in November 1998 and Crewe November 2000. It was stored in January 2001 and sent to Spain, numbered L34 for infrastructure duties in August 2001. After a number of years stored in Spain it returned to the UK in 2013 and following overhaul was reinstated to traffic in November 2015.
