David Mach is an internationally respected artist who is best known for
his large-scale pictorial collages and his commissioned sculpture. He
works with found materials which he transforms to create dynamic,
vibrant and often humorous metaphors for contemporary life. In 1998
Mach was elected a Royal Academician. He is currently a Trustee of
the National Portrait Gallery

The stairwell, originally a cold unwelcoming location is space crying
out for something to dominate it, and not a painting or a wall
hanging, something 3D. an object, sculpture. Not something
dangling from wires, either, that's always an ugly scenario and no
matter how well done can destroy a space. No, my sculpture has to
arrive there alone, somehow clutching the stairs, holding on to the
banisters. 'Elevator' climbs into the stairwell by herself, no wires, no
strings. She grips the sheer wall, her back arched, arm
butstretched, hand reaching for the light, a Bernini angel reaching for
heaven, a video-game Lara Croft freeze-framed in action.A fine
physical specimen caught in an unfeasible position and elastic effort.
She's a sculpture exploring a space
a
thriller asking you to watch
out for the next episode. Like a giant fridge magnet she's grounded
by her grip, but she floats in that space too, catching as much light
as she can
