Stunning Bird by Kaptured by Kala

Stunning Bird

Nothing quite like a white ibis in full breeding colors. The legs and face change from a pale tannish pink to a deep red. Females develop a red gular pouch that is attractive to the males. The pouch disappears along with the vibrant colors once there are eggs in the nest. This female has positioned herself where she can be easily seen in all her glory.

Beautiful Bird, Beautiful Bokeh

In breeding season white ibis legs, feet and face turn bright pink then deep red. Very striking against the white and beautiful blue eyes. This one was kind enough to perch where the background of blue skies and green leaves and sunlight created a beautiful bokeh background.

White Ibis Breeding Colors

There were lots of birds in their bright breeding colors at the rookery yesterday. The ibis really stood out. White bird with deep red legs, face & bill. Beautiful blue eyes that match the deep blue Texas sky backdrop. This bird should have no trouble attracting a mate.

No More Stripes by Kaptured by Kala

No More Stripes

The following week after seeing the ibis branchers, I found the nest abandoned and empty. A couple of weeks after that I ran into the 3 ibis babies who had fledged. They were all hidden behind leaves, several trees down from their old nest. No clear shots. By my 2nd round trip, one baby had come more out in the open plus I saw one other one fly a short distance. Finally, the bills are no longer striped although they are still two toned. In the last few weeks I visited the rookery, I never saw them out in the open again.

Ibis Feeding

On the back of the rookery, there were several additional ibis nests but they were much further back in the rookery so very hard to see. I did get one usable shot of a parent feeding older nestlings back in there.

Returning To The Nest

I made a second trip around the rookery and when I came upon the ibis nest again, the sibling branchers had returned to the nest. After branching, baby birds return to the nest for feedings from the parents.

Last Chick In The Nest

On my 4th week of visiting this ibis nest after the babies had hatched, I found just one baby in the nest. They are a little over 4 weeks old and the beak is still striped. Apparently they have reached the branching stage. I took a couple of shots, asked where its siblings were and moved on.

I'll Take The First Watch

On my second trip around the rookery that morning, the baby ibis were alone on the nest, the parent had left. One seemed to be standing guard while its siblings slept.

Hungry Baby Ibis

The baby is really going after the food now, stretching as far into the gullet as it can. The other baby is getting more interested in what is happening.

Feeding Baby Ibis

Like several other species at the rookery, the parent ibis regurgitates food and the baby reached up into parents bill to get the food. Here one baby is going for it while a sibling looks on.

Happy Little Ibis Family

You can see 2 hatchlings in this nest with a parent. Both parents will care for the chicks. The males usually take day shift with the females taking over at night. So this is probably Papa.
