Early BNSF celebrity(?) at Alliance

Burlington Northern Santa Fe tried several test schemes before coming up with “Heritage I” paint for the merged railroad. One on them, applied to BN SD70MAC No. 9647 was not very popular, and nicknamed the “Vomit Bonnet.” They took BN Grinstein colors of dark green and creme and applied it to the locomotive mimicking a Santa Fe warbonnet. Needless to say, it was one-of-a-kind! Here No. 9647 is seen inside the Alliance, Nebraska, locomotive shop on July 21, 2003, sitting next to a “real” warbonnet—former Santa Fe SD75M No. 201—now BNSF No. 8201.

Outnumbered by coal motors

Surrounded by AC technology and 4,000 h.p. locomotives in the Alliance, Nebraska, Diesel Shop, 1959-built SD9 No. 6115 gets a well-deserved rest for some work on July 21, 2003. The spiffy-looking high-hood Phase IV SD9 was former Colorado & Southern No. 832 and BN No. 6227—repainted into its Heritage I livery by OmniTrax in the summer of 2000.

Lookin’ like BN

Three Burlington Northern SD70MACs line up on the west side of the Alliance Diesel Shop waiting to be moved inside for maintenance work on June 13, 1998. It still looks pretty much like BN around the shop on this particular day. A good number of BN GE C30-7s mix with the SD70MACs, but a SD60M, Oakway SD60, and a SD40-2 can also be spotted.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe EMD SD70MAC No 9451 is in the diesel shop at Alliance, Nebraska, on July 21, 2003. There is plenty of access and light to get the job done on this former “Grinstein”-painted Burlington Northern locomotive, now decked out in BNSF’s “Heritage II” livery.

Grinstein line up

Three Burlington Northern SD70MACs line up on the west side of the Alliance Diesel Shop waiting to be moved inside for maintenance work on June 13, 1998. It still looks like BN around the shop except for the single orange SD70MAC and a Santa Fe C30-7. A good number of BN GE C30-7s mix with the SD70MACs, but a SD60M, Oakway SD60, and a SD40-2 can also be spotted.
