I suspect this happened because the lizard received an injury significant enough to the side of its tail to trigger a regeneration response, but not severe enough to lose it.

The mechanism of regeneration in lizards and salamanders is pretty interesting. Basically, a significant injury will cause a release of signaling peptides that leads to de-differentiating mature cells, back into pluripotent stem cells, and thereby growing new muscle, vasculature, bones, scales…. In this case, it led to an unusual result, but not as unusual as as some. In extreme cases, a second head can be grown.

This feisty little northwestern alligator lizard (Elagaria coerulea principals) is still pretty ticked off, after the indignity of being caught by one of our cats.

They are on their way to being relocated to a nearby park.

March 25, 2025: Spring Sentinel

We had our first 70°F day of the year and a record high of 71°, four degrees higher than the previous record. I rode down to snake heaven to see who was enjoying the sunshine and photographed the first alligator lizards of the year. Alligator lizard, Olympia, Washington.

See Ya Later...

...Alligator Lizard.

Found this guy sitting on top of a box at the back of my house, yesterday. I used the 10x optical camera on my phone, which does not do a good job in low light. I can understand why it was removed from later models. I have the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Anyway, I find these guys in the house once or twice a year. Not sure what brings them in. It's been pretty warm here the past week (80 degrees yesterday when I took this). Perhaps the warmth woke him up from a winter nap. This one was a youngling at about 8-9 inches in length, including the tail.

Alligator lizards can live up to 8-10 years.
