Amtrak's eastbound Southwest Chief races through Egypt Township on BNSF's Marceline Subdivision at 85mph on a sunny May morning with "Pepsi Can" AMTK 160 on the point. AMTK 160, built April 2001, once wore an expirimental early version of the Phase V livery, but now currently wears the eye-catching "Pepsi Can" variation of the Phase III livery that the fleet of B32-8WH locomotives once wore in honor of Amtrak's 50th Anniversary in 2021. Two Metrolink double level coaches are placed behind the two Amtrak P42DCs on their way to be refirbished as well as track inspection car AMTK 10004 "American View" tagging along on the rear of the train. Quite a site to see Metrolink rolling stock this far east on the former Santa Fe Transcon.

Classic locomotives and classic view, enough to perfectly represent the railway side of Chicago.
The legendary Amtrak’s train no.3 “Southwest Chief” has just left the Chicago Union station and begins its long journey that will take it through the country to Los Angeles, California. The journey takes about 43 hours spread over 2,265 miles (3,645 km). Formerly provided by AT&SF (Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad) as the “Super Chief”, it continues to offer a daily departure on both sides of the line.
On it's approach to Kansas City, Amtrak Train #4, the eastbound Southwest Chief is just minutes away from Holliday Junction, (named for the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway's first president Cyrus K. Holliday) where it will leave BNSF's Topeka Subdivision and enter the Emporia Sub for a twenty minute run to Argentine Yard and a refueling stop. July 19, 2022
Up front, P42DC 160 in the colorful Phase III heritage paint scheme, (dubbed the "Pepsi Can" scheme by fans) leads a second P42, the 71, in the then current Amtrak scheme. Debuting in 2021, the 160 wears a scheme worn by a group of twenty GE P32-8BWH units numbered 500-519 acquired by Amtrak in 1991. Sixteen of the original P32's remain on Amtrak's roster.
About an hour out of Kansas City, eastbound Amtrak Train #4, the Southwest Chief rolls over the 4082 foot Missouri River Bridge between Sibley, MO (south side of the river) and Floyd, MO (on the north side of the river). July 14, 2022.
Leading a baggage car and six Superliners, P42DC 160 in the colorful Phase III heritage paint scheme, (dubbed the "Pepsi Can" scheme by fans) leads a second P42, the 71, in the then current Amtrak scheme.
Debuting in 2021, the 160 wears a scheme worn by a group of twenty GE P32-8BWH units numbered 500-519 acquired by Amtrak in 1991. Sixteen of the original P32's are still on Amtrak's roster although all no longer wear these atttactive colors.
With clear signals ahead, eastbound Amtrak Train #4 zips past a stopped westbound BNSF vehicle train at Milepost 386.0 in Carrollton, Missouri on BNSF's busy Marceline Subdivision. April 21, 2023. Leading today's Southwest Chief are P42DC 203 in colorful "Operation Lifesaver" colors along with P42 33 trailing behind.
Amtrak 203's graphics, applied to increase awareness, aims to inform the public of the dangers of death and injuries due to vehicular traffic incursions with trains at grade crossings. The Operation Lifesaver program is currently active in forty-six of the United States with a stellar 84% reduction of crossing incidents since it's inception in 1972.
I never thought I would see this at this part of Santa Fe Junction. Due to work on the Missouri River Bridge in Sibley, the train (8 cars) was routed through the West Bottoms. This shot was not as good as I wanted since none of the Superliners are visible. If I didn't start talking to another railfan, I would have run up to Bluff Road to get what would have been a better shot. A pair of P42DCs, #60 & #39, are the power for the Chicago bound Amtrak.
A combined Amtrak 4 & 6 cross the Illinois River at Chillicothe, IL along the train's old Santa Fe stomping grounds of the BNSF Chillicothe Subdivison. A derailment up in Somonauk, IL on the Mendota Subdivision earlier in the afternoon prompted the reroute. The combined nature of the consist has become the norm. 7/10/24
