Portrait of “Anaïs Nin” by Natashia Troubetskoia. National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C.

“Anaïs Nin wrote about female identity and sexuality in a style that was both explicit and poetic. Her most significant work, a diary spanning six decades, recounts her transformative experiences in Paris from 1926 to 1939.

“At first, Nin felt intimidated by the city’s competitive literary scene. She hid her insecurity behind ‘original, striking clothes which distinguish me from other women.’ She was delighted when a blue velvet coat she had made was mistaken for a design by the eminent couturier Jeanne-Marie Lanvin. It appears in this portrait by the Russian artist Natashia Troubetskoia, who admired Nin’s eccentric style.

“In between portrait sittings, Nin was writing her first book – a study of the writer D. H. Lawrence. Published in 1932, its shocking sexual candor marked her distinctive literary voice. As she wrote in her diary, she no longer needed clothing to express her uniqueness. ‘I have other things to do.’” [From the accompanying text]

Ann Arbor Sunday Morning

Famous People 1984: from left to right, Woody Allen, Edgar Allan Poe, Hermann Hesse, Franz Kafka, Anais Nin. I should know them because they are important in history. You can read below comments from Ann Arbor's prime historian: Wystan Stevens that helps clear up who these people are. In my opinion this is one of AA jewels.

Reach Out With Friendship

Each friend represents a world in us, a world not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born.

Intoxication

Reality doesn't impress me. I only believe in intoxication, in ecstasy, and when ordinary life shackles me, I escape, one way or another. No more walls.

This is heather in our front yard, that seems to last most of the year, but in spring it's this lovely pink. I took this image with my Lensbaby Sweet 45 and a 12mm extension tube.

All done in camera.

'Anais Nin, Paris 1932' by Brassai

A 1932 portrait of French-Cuban essayist and memoirist, Angela Anais Juana Antolina Rosa Edelmira Nin y Culmell, better known as ‘Anais Nin’ (1903-1977). With a career spanning several decades, Nin achieved what no other woman could at her time. She lived a rather controversial life, writing diaries, short stories, journals, essays and erotica. Born into a family of artistry, it is clear that her creativity was inherent. Bold and vehement in demeanour, she wrote without inhibitions, drawing most of the content from her own experiences. Her tangled love life almost always created new rumors and scandalized her past. Yet, unstirred by the gossip surrounding her life, she continued to contribute to literature. Her finest work, ‘Delta of Venus’ projects an unblemished skill of liberal and intense writing. True to her beliefs, she always allowed her instincts to direct her. She had several relationships with famous authors, whom she candidly wrote about in her diary and who evidently became characters of her erotic books, of which the most famous long-term affair was with the American surrealist, Henry Miller.

Anais Nin's portrait was taken in 1932 by Hungarian-French photographer Brassaï, (the pseudonym of Jules (Gyula) Halász (1899-1984)). Brassai, a photographer, sculptor, medallist, writer, and filmmaker rose to international fame in France in the 20th century. He was one of numerous Hungarian artists who flourished in Paris beginning between the World Wars. Brassaï captured the essence of the city in his photographs. In addition to photos of the seedier side of Paris, he portrayed scenes from the life of the city’s high society, its intellectuals, its ballet, and the grand operas. Brassai photographed many of his artist friends, including Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Alberto Giacometti, and several of the prominent writers of his time, like Jean Genet and Henri Michaux.
