Abandoned Oilwell in Big Sinking Oilfield Kentucky

The electric motor is missing as well as the sampling ball valve. Part of the huge Ashland Oil Waterflood Project in Lee County. Hundreds of oilfield pumpers and roustabouts lost their jobs when this oil lease and the Wiser Oil Company leases were abandoned. Thousands of these orphan well remain in Kentucky's biggest oilfield. The black tank, above, is an oil water separator tank.

Very basic design but strange that wood siding was used. Usually tin is used in the oilfields for siding. Note the rusting storage tank to right. Years ago many operators in the Big Sinking bought high sulphur natural gas and injected the gas, secondary recovery, into the oil sands to increase production. Years later water flooding was used and the water and sulphur mixed, creating sulphuric acid, that ate the mental tanks and fittings.

Part of the Ashland Oil Company's waterflood project in the 10,000 acre Big Sinking Oilfield. The project began in the 1950's and ended when the lease shut down in the early 1990's. Located on the south side of Cave Fork Road. The Daniel Boone National Forest owns the surface rights to many acres in this area but not the mineral rights.
