A wide angle view to the south-southeast, capturing the expanse of a meadow with an evergreen backdrop. This setting was captured during a hike along the Kings Creek Falls Trail within Lassen Volcanic National Park.

A setting looking to the south while taking in views across this southeastern Colorado landscape present in Mesa Verde National Park. The view is at the Soda Canyon Overlook. My thought on composing this image was to pull back a little on the focal length and capture a wide-angle feel, while angling my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward to bring up the horizon a little higher into the image. That I felt would help create more of a sense of grandeur in the canyons and cliff walls.
A setting looking to the south while taking in views across the mountain desert landscape present at a roadside parking area in Joshua Tree National Park. The setting is looking to some ridges and peaks leading up to Ryan Mountain. What drew me into the setting was the varied landscape from the nearby bushes to the rock formations at the base of the mountainside, and then the snow covered ridges of the mountain itself. I then lined up my Nikon SLR camera to best capture that while still including some blue skies above to contrast the earth-tones in the lower portion of the image.
A setting looking to the south while taking in views of this bristlecone and evergreen forest along the Bristlecone Loop Trail in Bryce Canyon National Park. My thought on composing this image was to use a portrait orientation to take advantage of the tall trees to my front. The hiking trail would also be a leading line into the image. The blue skies above would be that color contrast to complement the earth-tones in the lower portion of the image and also highlight those tall trees caught in the glow of morning sunlight.
A setting looking to the south-southeast while taking in views of a snowy landscape along the Hidden Valley Nature Trail in Joshua Tree National Park. This was another image captured where I liked the layering present with the foreground and it's snowy landscape leading up to the rock formation in the distance. I decided to minimize the overcast and overcast skies as I felt it really didn't add much to the image.
While walking around and exploring different parts along the Loop Drive in White Sands National Park. The view is looking to the south to a lone yucca plant. I chose to use the sand dune with its distinct white sands as a backdrop for the plant as it definitely helped to highlight it. I didn't see a reason to not include some of the blue skies and clouds above as I lined up the image. I felt that they weren’t a distraction and definitely complemented the colors of the white sands.
A setting looking to the south while taking in views across white sands and dune formations present along the Alkali Flat Trail in White Sands National Park. I happen to be walking across an open area and going up the gentle slope of a dune ridge. That gave me an unobstructed view looking to a nearby dune formation, and then beyond. What also drew me into this image was the whites that were all around, but centered in the image was a cluster of small trees and brushes. Kind of a color and setting contrast in this part of the national park.
A view looking to the south across the canyon and gorge with blue skies above at the Big Island View overlook in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. This was on the North Rim of the national park. With this image, I tried to balance the canyon and nearby landscape in the image. The Gunnison River was flowing by in the image right, but there was this outcropping that extended in the canyon gorge to the image left. There was also some of the foreground in the lower image left that I felt helped to give a sense of perspective and a layering of the image.
I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 3 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.
While at the Islands Peaks View overlook along the North Rim with a view looking to the south across the canyon and gorge with blue skies above in Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. With this image, I tried to balance the canyon and nearby landscape in the image. All around were outcroppings of ridgelines, cross-fissures and rocky islands between both sides of the gorge canyon walls. There was also some of the foreground in the lower image left that I felt helped to give a sense of perspective and a layering of the image.
I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 3 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.
A view looking to the south while crossing a the bridge over the Teklanika River in Denali National Park & Preserve. The views that morning and afternoon were very hazy from the recent wildfires in the area along with the overhead sunlight. What I wanted to capture with this image was the look across the glacial valley with the river flowing by and mountain peaks off in the distance. I did some initial post-processing work making adjustments to contrast, brightness and saturation while playing around as I learned how to work with DxO PhotoLabs 3 and then used the ClearView tool to reduce some of the haze present. As I felt the hazy skies above were kind of a negative space for this image, I decided to crop a portion of that and let that add to a more wide-angle, panoramic feel to the image.
