Fluff mode: activated.

These little Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) goslings was completely focused on the important business of nibbling grass — one clumsy step at a time. Covered in sunshine-yellow fluff and full of curiosity, it was a moment of calm joy in the wild.

I never get tired of photographing these tiny wanderers in spring — each one a reminder of how beautiful small things can be.

Tufted Titmouse Fledgling Calling by Steve Creek

Tufted Titmouse Fledgling Calling

This young Tufted Titmouse opened wide to call out, likely begging for food from a nearby parent. Its expression and posture caught a moment of urgency and need.

I took this photo in my Arkansas yard, where several fledglings were active around the feeders. This one had landed on a garden hook and was vocalizing nonstop.

The bird’s short crest and soft gray plumage show it’s still young. Begging calls like this are common at this stage, as fledglings rely on adults for frequent feeding even after leaving the nest.

Common Grackle Fledgling in Grass

This young Common Grackle stood quietly among the grass, still figuring out its place in the world. Its scruffy plumage and wide-eyed expression captured a moment of transition.

I photographed it in my yard in Arkansas, where fledglings are starting to leave the nest and explore. The setting was simple, just some patchy ground and pine needles, but it gave a clear view of the bird’s developing features.

The bird’s loose, uneven feathers and slightly oversized beak show it’s fresh out of the nest. It’s likely still dependent on its parents but already learning to navigate its surroundings on foot and by wing.

One of the best parts of spring is seeing new life. I particularly enjoy watching birds feed their young.
