Remark: The bridge seen in this postcard image spanned the Little Calumet River on what is known today as Howe Road and was referred to as the Howe Bridge. The bridge was constructed by Lane Bridge & Iron Works of Chicago in 1895.

This bridge collapsed and was destroyed during bridge repair operations on November 9, 1953. Tri-State Steel Company was contracted for the repairs. However, the Porter County Highway Department's crane went through the bridge causing it to collapse. Newspaper reports state that "No one was injured, but the bridge was totally destroyed."

Lane Bridge & Iron Works built several iron span bridges throughout Porter County during the mid-1890s using iron repurposed from dismantled buildings erected for the 1893 World Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Today [2023], only one bridge that this company erected, Dunn's Bridge over the Kankakee River, is still standing.

Scenic and Historic Indiana Dunes National Park

While walking the Bailly Chellberg - Little Calumet Loop with a view looking to the south across a grassy meadow to the historic Bailly Homestead. In composing this image, I went back-and-forth in my mind as to angling my Nikon SLR camera. Here I decided to angle it more leveled on and have a balanced focus with the meadow and surrounding trees. While the overcast skies were in my mind kind of a negative space, here they kind of helped to balance the image and national park setting. Kind of a color contrast, if you will. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 4 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted for the final image.

Bailly Fur Trading Post Cabin

On this beautiful autumn afternoon, the Bailly Homestead was full of kids. They were visiting on field trips and learning about the history and ecology of the place. I spent some time watching the kids interact with the staff. It looked like a wonderful program. The kids were enthused and the staff (from Dunes Leaning Center) was excellent. They pull groups from all over Chicago and Northern Indiana.
