Marche 51-02 - 555,5 kmh

FR – 20 février 2007 12h17, marche 51-02, Passavant-en-Argonne, Km 194 LGV Est

During test run 51-02 at 555.5 km/h, the V150 trainset throws up a spectacular plume of dust in its wake. Yet not a single piece of ballast is lifted.

A full set of Multimarks at Torrent

For the better part of the past week I had been keeping and eye on when this ballast train would return south from Golden. Recently there had been issues with washouts and avalanches on the Mountain Sub, you know the usual mess that comes with this time of year we call spring.

Under the ID of 6BAL-28, a three pack of SD40-2’s wearing the Multimark livery No.’s CP 5988, 5996, and 5922 traverse the Windermere Sub at South Torrent with about 2000’ of ballast empties in tow and CP Angus Van Caboose to bring up the rear.

FR – 20 février 2007 12h17, marche 51-02, Passavant-en-Argonne, Km 194 LGV Est

Arc and dust : The usual photographs of this test TGV running at over 550 km/h (342 mph) reveal little that conveys its extraordinary speed—except when watching it recede into the distance. At such speeds, the train itself becomes almost abstract—the plume of dust and the brief electrical arc at the pantograph are the only visible clues to the forces at play.

This rear view shows the V150 test train at 555.5 km/h (345.2 mph), trailing a spectacular plume of dust. Fortunately, the ballast is already well compacted and no stones are thrown up, apart from a few minor impacts recorded later beneath the train during maintenance inspections at the Pantin–Ourcq depot. The overhead line is reinforced and highly tensioned; its slight uplift is barely perceptible in the photograph. The visible arcing at the pantograph reflects the extreme conditions of current collection at these unprecedented speeds.

This was run No. 51-02 on 20 February 2007. Run numbering was simple: 51 for the day of the year, 01 for the positioning run eastbound, and 02 for a test run westbound (towards Paris). The following run, No. 51-04, became the “technicians’ record” at 559.4 km/h (347.6 mph)—unofficial, and deliberately kept below the ultimate target ahead of the official record attempt on 3 April.

Ready rock

When I reached the south side of Hanley Falls, I made a quick stop to record this parked ballast train. I don't know if this really had a DPU on it or if it was two Granite Falls rock trains sharing the same side track. A month later a BNSF ballast train would derail and slide off an embankment near Morris, not sure if it was this set or a similar one. July 29, 2025.

RPRS 218 469 + ballasttrein // Wetter 27.03.26

Up, up and away

After a run along the bottom of the glacial valley containing Lake Benton and the "hole in the mountain" prairie, the Huron Sub climbs out of the hole and back up to the level prairie. Once up this grade the line swings west again and passes through tiny Verdi, MN not far from the South Dakota line. Adding some drama to the last RCP&E shot of this trip, perhaps one of my last of an RCP&E EMD out here, is a nice burp of exhaust as they work up the hill. June 29, 2025.

Prairie paradise

I was glad to get ahead of the train to the classic shot south (RR west) of Lake Benton. My greed was paying off. I don't get out here much, so I knew I should make the most of this chance. Indeed, I haven't been back, and ex-BNSF GEs seem to have taken over. All you can do is enjoy what's in front of you and on this perfect summer day it was a brilliant green preserve hosting a fine pair of EMDs in G&W's ubiquitous orange. June 29, 2025.

One last lake

I went ahead to Lake Benton where I had full sun for the first time all day. I decided to be greedy and stop in town for this view with the lake stretching off into the distance. The only other time I followed a train through here I played it safe by going ahead and setting up south of town. June 29, 2025.
