A male black grouse (Lyrurus tetrix) photographed from the car, in the Pasvik valley almost two weeks ago. (And a lovely little heath spotted-orchid next to it.)

I have better photos of them from a tent during their lek in spring, but it is exciting to meet them unexpected like this as well. And I think it's my first time seeing one during summer.

David kindly informed me where and when I might get an opportunity to see Black Grouse feeding and he was correct. Unfortunately only one appeared, it wasn't very close to my mobile hide and didn't hang around long.
I did get a few photos but they needed heavy cropping and the removal of copious amounts of cow dung - messy job.

David and I took an evening trip up Glen Cannich to see the Black Grouse he had discovered the previous day - thanks for letting me invite myself along David :-)
We counted 11 in total but they were dotted around over a wide area so didn't demonstrate their 'lekking' behaviour although one briefly gave a display of tail feathers a long way in the distance.
