Climbing over Pine Ridge

Slowly climbing over Nebraska’s Pine Ridge, a Burlington Northern coal train grinds upgrade on Crawford Hill between Crawford and Belmont, Nebraska, on the afternoon of July 2, 1989. Pulling hard up front, the train is led by five Cascade green six-motors—a pair of EMD SD40-2s, a pair of GE C30-7s and a GE U30C.

A trio of Grinstein-colored Burlington Northern EMD SD70MACs on a westbound coal train smoke it up as they negotiate an undulating main line through West Berea, Nebraska, on July 4, 1996. This train is heading west on the Butte Subdivision, which crosses Crawford Hill on the way to the next crew change point of Edgemont, S.D.
