Its close cousin, the civilian Boeing 707, has long been retired from service, but the USAF’s KC-135 Stratotanker remains in front-line use. I regularly see the type flying out of McDill AFB in Tampa.
The KC-135 in-flight refuelling aircraft and the C-135 Stratolifter entered USAF service in 1957, one year ahead of the first commercial flights of the Boeing 707. The military Boeing was developed directly from the original Boeing 367-80 prototype, and has a narrower and shorter fuselage than that developed later for the Boeing 707.
Whilst the KC-135 has been progressively upgraded with more modern and economical engines to prolong its service life, its replacement by a newer design has been a protracted affair, mired by controversy and allegations of corruption. The Boeing KC-46 was eventually chosen, derived from the Boeing 767, and the first examples are now appearing in USAF service.
