Very long temporary 60kmh speed limit, for NO REASON! Bruce Highway south of Ingham, QLD, 09/11/18

e24262a. Looking north and south (see e24621a). The normal speed limit here is 100.

This is just incredibly irresponsible on the part of the Main Roads Dept or whoever is responsible.

NO ONE sticks to the 60 limit here and most drivers just ignore it completely.

It sets up the most horrible conflict between observing the law and driving safely and harmoniously. If you do 60 here, or anything under 80 or 90, you drive very much slower than most other vehicles and you effectively become a hazard!!

I see this sort of thing very frequently on our highways!!

Those responsible for the proper implementation of temporary speed signs and other signage to do with roadworks and road safety, need to be held to account for their actions!!

d95481a. After a recent fatality due to a car hitting a brumby, a temporary 80kmh zone has been implemented for many kilometres along this highway, which normally has a 100kmh speed limit.

Brumbies (feral horses) were recently culled as a result of this incident by way of shooting from a helicopter, but the 80kmh zone remains in place. There seems to be no move to further cull brumbies nor to lift this 'temporary' 80kmh speed limit.

Meanwhile just a bit further north, where brumbies are also known to prevail, the speed limit is 100 (see d95484a).

I agree that the speed limit should be lowered if there is a real and present hazard. But it then needs to have a lot of reminder signs, and to be enforced! The problem here is that there are far too few signs and most drivers just IGNORE this 80kmh zone completely.

So what has effectively happened here is the creation of a conflict between the law-abiding driver and the 'normal' driver.

The law-abiding driver sees vehicles. including large trucks, coming up very rapidly behind, and showing utter contempt for the law-abiding driver by following far too closely, dangerously and offensively and often overtaking when it is not fully safe to do so... and ripping off up the road, with utter impunity!

And the police are JUST NOT INTERESTED IF YOU MAKE A COMPLAINT ABOUT SOMETHING LIKE THAT!

Don't meet us by accident, Bruce Hwy near Maryborough, QLD, 01/01/14

d79818a. This annoys me intensely.

I just wish the policing regime for road safety was a whole lot better than it is. The police seem to concentrate on a small number of things, which correlate highly with revenue-raising, and fail to police various other aspects entirely, such as tailgating.

And very significantly, they have disempowered the public when it comes to assisting in the road safety effort! Rather than encouraging the public to make complaints about dangerous or illegal driving, they have done just the opposite. My experiences with making complaints to the police has been extremely disturbing. They just don't want to know!!

I can't express my concern over this strongly enough!

Better roads, Bruce Hwy, N of Sarina, QLD, 15/05/13

d77047a. Hold on; wrong emphasis!

RACQ (Royal Automobile Club of Queensland) should surely be concentrating on improving road safety! And the first thing to do there is to improve the rule of law, by improving the policing of road rules, and empowering the public to help; by making complaints and actually having the police treat those complaints seriously and follow through on them.

Billions of dollars are being spent on the Bruce Hwy. And billions more on other roads in Queensland. If RACQ wants our roads to be made better at a faster rate than what is currently happening, then how many extra hundreds of millions would be needed? What other vitally important services and infrastructure would suffer if this sort of money was redirected into roads?

Meanwhile, a substantial improvement in road safety via better regulation of road rules could be made, which would cost a tiny fraction of the overall road budget for Qld.
