An owl, perched outside the building where I work, I finally spotted after years of futility. The critter, framed in the ivy about six floors up, required a graduate student with a small set of binoculars and a keen sense of where the bird nested to help finally find it (once she spotted the bird, she was so enjoyed by it that she gladly helped passers-by locate it). I brought in my DSLR, with lenses and teleconverters I normally use for moon shots, to get close to that elusive owl once I was off the clock, over two late-afternoon sessions.
I don't know if it was the same owl (in this case, a great horned owl), but I've heard its hooting many times. Sharp-eyed students passing by would chatter in amazement over the bird and point up, seemingly is the direction of tall, thin trees adjacent to the building; each time; I could never spot the critter. Good thing that enthusiastic graduate student was out there to help pinpoint the bird
