Hasta ahora, se conocen cinco especies de carpinteros en Loma Merchán. Anteriormente les mostramos cuatro especies; aquí está la quinta. La ausencia de rojo en el "bigote" indica que es una hembra.

To date, 5 species of woodpeckers are known in Loma Merchán. We've previously shown you 4 species, here is the fifth. The lack of red on the "moustache" indicate a female.

Esta especie y la otra Thraupis (el famoso Azulero) parecen haber aumentado en los últimos dos meses. Para determinar si existe una fluctuación estacional en un aumento real, necesitaríamos al menos tres años de observación de aves en esta zona.

This species and the other Thraupis (the Blue-grey Tanager) seem to increase since two months. To know if there are seasonal fluctuation on a real increase, we would need at least three years of birding here.

Este ave es una de las más abundantes en algunos lugares, como Bogotá o incluso las tierras bajas de Argentina. Sin embargo, la subespecie Z. c. costaricensis, que habita los Andes colombianos, prefiere altitudes elevadas y es rara en Bucaramanga. Ocasionalmente se observa en la parte más alta de Loma Merchán, en la plantación de café. ¡Esta es nuestra primera foto de la especie aquí!

This bird is one of the most abundant in some places, such as Bogotá or even the lowlands of Argentina. However, the subspecies Z. c. costaricensis, which inhabits the Colombian Andes, prefers high altitudes and is rare in Bucaramanga. It is occasionally observed in the highest part of Loma Merchán, in the coffee plantation. This is our first pic of the species here!

La mayoría de las hembras y jovenes de semilleros son marrones y muy difíciles de identificar. Sin embargo, la única Volatinia es fácil de distinguir de las demás porque es la única que presenta rayas en el pecho y los flancos.

Most females and young seedeaters are brown and very difficult to identify. The unique Volatinia is, however, easy to distinguish from all others because it is the only one streaked on the breast and the flanks.

Esta especie es única en su género. El macho exhibe un plumaje azul-negro llamativo que ha inspirado su nombre en inglés. Es fácil distinguir a los otros semilleros oscuros del único Volatinia. Este último tiene un pico mucho más estrecho.

This species is unique in its kind. The male displays a striking blue-black plumage that has inspired its English name. It is easy to distinguish the other dark seedeaters from the sole Volatinia. The latter has a much narrower bill.

Aparte de los abundantes gallinazos/zopilotes/chulos, esta especie es la rapaz más común que se observa en el cielo de Loma Merchán. Al menos una pareja se reprodujo con éxito en la propiedad este año.

Away from the abundant vultures, this species is the most common raptor seen in the sky above Loma Merchán. At least one couple bred successfully in the property this year.

Este es el macho de esta especie singular. Compartimos una foto de una hembra, mostrando su plumaje rojizo, en febrero pasado (enlace abajo). El macho es principalmente negro con una línea blanca en las coberteras alares, a menudo oculta por las escapulares. Sin embargo, si observas de cerca, puedes distinguir un atisbo de blanco en esta imagen.


This is the male of this distinctive species. We shared a photo of a female, showcasing her rufous plumage, last February (link below). The male is predominantly black with a white line on the wing coverts, often concealed by the scapulars. However, if you look closely, you can spot a glimpse of the white in this image.

Esta abundante ave solo llega a Loma Merchán ocasionalmente. ¡La reserva natural es "demasiado natural" para esta especie urbana!

Mientras observábamos el raro Progne tapera de ayer, nos quedamos un buen rato bajo los cables eléctricos y tuvimos más oportunidades para sacar fotos. Esta especie casi nunca se posa en soportes naturales en Loma Merchán. Mañana publicaremos una foto tomada en ese mismo cable. Es un ave común en Bucaramanga… ¡y sorprendentemente escasa en nuestra propiedad!

While working onthe rare Progne tapera yesterday, we lingered a while beneath the electric wires and encountered additional photo opportunities. This species seldom perches on natural supports in Loma Merchán. Tomorrow, we will publish a pic taken on those same wire, it is a common bird in Bucaramanga… that is surprisingly scarce in our property!

In more than six months in Loma Merchán, we've seen this species daily but always flying, not even once perched!

Dada la dificultad de fotografiar a esta reinita, que está en constante movimiento y permanece en los oscuros suelos del bosque, esta puede considerarse la foto más afortunada del año. Ella se posó en un rayo de luz por un momento mientras la cámara estaba lista.

Given the difficulty of photographing this warbler, which is constantly on the move and live on dark forest floors, this might be the luckiest photo of the year. It stepped into a ray of light for a moment when the camera was just ready.

There are many different wren species in Loma Merchán. This one is more is common around the houses but occur also in the forested area.

Como se indica en la primera foto, esta es una especie poco común en Loma Merchán. Por otro lado, es muy familiar y fácil de aproximar. El ave aquí es diferente del anterior, que tenía plumas juveniles y adultas en el manto.

As said under the first photo, this is an uncommon species in Loma Merchán. In another hand, it is very familiar and easy to approach. The bird here is different from the one of the 1st of May that had juvenile and adult feathers on the mantle.

Cuando publicamos nuestra primera foto de esta gran especie, en febrero pasado, indicamos que se encuentra en números bajos en Loma Merchán. Desde entonces, hemos encontrado que tres parejas se reproducen aquí, y este es un juvenil (con el borde rojizo de las plumas) que nació cerca de nuestra casa.

When we published our first photo of this large species, last February, we stated that it is present in low numbers in Loma Merchán. Since the, we found that 3 pairs breed here. This one, a juvenile (rufous edge of feathers), was born nearby our house.

Los semilleros son probablemente el grupo de aves más difícil de identificar específicamente en Loma Merchán. Publicaremos comparaciones didácticas en nuestros sitios web, pero también intentaremos mostrar aquí buenas imágenes de individuos complejos. La forma del pico identifica que es un Semillero intermedio, las comisuras sin plumas indica un juvenil y las alas grises nos dicen que es un macho.

Seedeaters are probably the most difficult group of birds to identify specifically in Loma Merchán. We will publish didactic comparisons on our websites, but we will also try to show, here, good images of complicated individuals. The shape of the beak identify a Grey Seedeater, the unfeathered gape indicate a juvenile and the grey wings tell us that it is a male.

Desde enero, solo un ejemplar visitó nuestros jardines. La primera foto mostraba a este macho mudando su plumaje en el comedero para colibríes; probablemente esta foto, en una percha natural, sea más atractiva.

Since January, only one individual visited our gardens. The first pic was showing this moulting male on the colibri feeder; probably that this photo, on a natural perch, is more attractive.

Este es el tercer turpial que publicamos y el tercero más común en Loma Merchán. Aquí es un juvenil, pero probablemente provenía de fuera. No encontramos ninguna prueba de reproducción de la especie en la propiedad.

This is the third oriole we published and third most common of Loma Merchán. This one is a juvenile but it came probably from outside. We didn't find any proof of breeding of the species in the property.
