L254-8177 depart Melbourne (2005)

Former WAGR and Westrail then ATN Access L254 together with 8177 head out of Dynon and across the Maribynong River with MC2. The train is about to enter Bunbury Street tunnel, one of the bottlenecks for freight paths into and out of Melbourne and its port. The L class locos were based on the US EMD SD40 locomotives but had reduced dimensions to fit the WAGR loading gauge. Classified as model GT26C they had the same power plant as the Victorian C class locos: 16-645-E3. The Melbourne skyline has changed dramatically since this photo was taken and FCL has completely disappeared as a freight forwarding company. (April 21, 2005)
