Black-throated Blue warbler, female, Setophaga caerulescens

I was delighted to see both males and females while in Cuba, the females appeared less common or were possibly more skulking. We found them to be widespread across Cuba, often in thickets and small groves of trees and usually with other wintering/passage migrant warblers. 2 races breed across Se Canada and the USA and both winter south to Bahamas and Greater Antilles. We saw several birds at the superb Rio Azul near Majagua where large numbers of wintering and passage warblers were concentrated.

Black-whiskered Vireo, adult summer plumage, Vireo altiloquus barbatulus,

We were delighted that Black-whiskered Vireos had arrived back from their wintering grounds in South America. Stu had said that when he arrived 2 weeks before they were not present. We found them singing in similar places to Blackcap in Western Europe ie forest and forest edge, thickets with taller trees etc. This was one of several birds seen in Rio Azul near Majagua where large numbers of wintering and passage warblers were concentrated. This race is found in coastal south Florida, Cuba, Isle of Pines, and the Cayman Islands and winters south to Amazonian Brazil. 5 other races across the Caribbean.

Zapata Wren, Ferminia cerverai, Endemic,

This is one of those “must see” species when you bird Cuba. It is a very large Wren and can be very secretive. It is only found in the dense vegetation of Zapata Swamp in the SW of the country.
