The Discovery and the Defender

File: 2023009-0011

Land Rover Owner International Show 2023 at Belvoir Castle, near Grantham, Leicestershire, United Kingdom. Saturday 9th September 2023.

About the photograph.

The Land Rover you see in the front, the one with the number 9 on the door and the number 575 on one of the windows, is a Land Rover Discovery.

Notice the taillights are higher up, therefore this is a Discovery Series II.

It had been customised for extreme off-roading, likely by replacing the factory standard shock absorbers with aftermarket parts, also notice the extra cage bar around the roof and sides, plus the all-terrain tyres (US: tires).

The Discovery is a series of seven-seater family SUVs, manufactured by Land Rover (later renamed as Jaguar Land Rover).

The Range Rover was designed to be an everyday 4x4 that could work as either a utility vehicle or a family car, while the Series models (1948-1985) was often seen as a light agricultural and utility vehicle. However the Range Rover moved towards a more upmarket luxury vehicle, so the Discovery was intended to fill in the role the Range Rover was originally supposed to be for.

The Discovery Series I was presented during the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show, it was based on the Range Rover, but designed to be more affordably, and as a fully off-roading everyday family car. It offered a more luggage space with the optional of adding two more seats making it a total of 7 seats.

Behind the Discovery is a heavily customised Land Rover Defender modified for extreme off-roading. I have no idea which version this is, and don’t have much information about it, only that I know it is a Defender.

The Land Rover Defender started life around 1983 as either a replacement or a total overhaul of the original Land Rover, often known as the Series Land Rover or Land Rover Series.

The Defender looked very much similar to the Series, both being boxy shaped, have similar style, and designed to work in similar way, hence some people tend to mistakenly call the original Land Rover Series as Defender.

But there is a major difference between the two, such as the Series having two plate windscreen while the Defender have one whole window. The Series used leaf spring suspension compared to the Defender having a coil spring suspension, those being the two of the many difference.

Here in the photo, both are seen showing off their off-roading abilities over some kind of a mock up rough terrain, during a live display show in the arena. The Defender is going up a balancing beam, which is basically a seesaw.

The photo was shot in colour but due to strong sunlight, a lot of dehazing option was needed, however I thought to convert them into black and white, by using Adobe Lightroom, for a more dramatic action.

About the day.

In the early morning, I woke up, got ready, and took a three hour drive to Belvoir Castle, but that morning was already very warm, with a cloudless sky and the sun beating down on the land.

By the time I got there, I was already feeling very hot. I wore light coloured t-shirt, lightweight trousers, and a lot of sun cream, plus plenty of water.

Sadly, after about a couple of hours, I became a bit overheated in the burning sky, there weren’t much shades around, and it was kind of a heatwave of some sort.

So I had to give up, and return home to avoid getting a heat stroke, I only took like about 400 shots, and that was all I could manage.

When I got home, I had to have a cool down and a rest, and thankfully managed to stay well.

About the photograph.

This is a heavily customised Land Rover Defender modified for extreme off-roading. I have no idea which version this is, and I did not buy a programme guide, so I don’t have much information about it, only that I know it is a Defender.

Here in the photograph, it looked like it got stuck or something, and if you notice in the front of the car, is a man wearing an Union Flag T-Shirt.

He is seen pulling out the cable from the winch, with the aim to attach it to another Land Rover, for the purpose of pulling it out of a jam.

More action photos of the man in the Union Flag T-shirt will be uploaded in the near future.

Morning of Wednesday 8th February 2023.
Bore dydd Mercher 8 Chwefror 2023.

About the photograph.
Am y ffotograffau.

This is Olivia, a model I booked for a two-hours outdoors photo-shoot, in the countryside north of Newport (Welsh: Casnewydd).

Here, she is posing in a winter outfit containing a size 10, long, light brown faux fur coat from Astraka of London, along with her own turtleneck jumper, jeans with shiny strips down the sides, and white trainers.

In the photo, Olivia is posing by leaning against the back of the Freelander, with her left arm resting on the spare wheel, and holding a can of Rockstar energy drink in her right hand.

The drink is Rockstar’s Mango Orange Passionfruit flavour which had since been discontinued. Coffee often taste horrible to me, so I often use this flavour instead of coffee. I only have two cans left, and now use them as props.

Rockstar, often stylized as ROCKSTAR, is an American energy drinks brand created in 2001, and is considered to be third highest after Red Bull and Monster. The brand is now part of PepsiCo.

The vehicle is a 2005 Land Rover Freelander.

It is a diesel 2.0L Td4 SE model with manual gearbox, and a BMW M47 engine. The tyres are BF Goodrich T/A KO2 All Terrain tyres on steel wheels. The Freelander was an entry-level Land Rover from 1997 to 2006, before being replaced by the Freelander 2 until 2015.

As Olivia was booked for two-hours, we were at two different location only for 50 minutes each. The location here is the car park of a pub, with special thanks to the management for permissions.

What is this all about?

This is the first in a series of a long-term project I started working on, which is called Project: Freelander Ladies. It is a variation of the so called Land Rover Girls type of photographs. Generally, the majority of the Land Rover Girls kind of photos tend to be of younger women posing next to mostly either the Series or the Defender production models, and less common are the Discovery or Range Rover models. There are barely enough photos of women posing next to a Freelander, so my aim is to create some, specially for the Freelander owners and fans to enjoy.

In addition to this being a “cars and girls” kind of photography which is the main role, there are other roles, including photographs needed for a graphic design project.

Red Rolling

File: 2023005-0260

Shelsley Walsh, Worcestershire, England, United Kingdom, on Saturday 3rd June 2023.

About the photograph.

Why did I use the title Red Rolling for this photo? Well, I see this red racing car rolling forwards to the pre-start line, hence the title Red Rolling.

The driver is Wallace Menzies from Alloa, Scotland, in his red Gould GR59-M open-wheel, single-seat, formula car, bearing the number 1.

His car’s engine is a 3300cc Cosworth XD V8, and notice the Avon brand name on the tyres, as the majority, if not all, the cars taking part have tyres from Avon.

The two mechanics are seen here helping prepare the car for the pre-start, after this point, they must leave the car alone, when the car rolls forwards to the starting line.

The Gould GR59-M is designed, developed and built by Gould Racing, in 2016. Gould Racing a British company since 2003, for most hillclimbing motorsport drivers.

Menzies, according to Gould’s website, had been champion of 2019 and 2021.

About Shelsley Walsh.

Shelsley Walsh is a motorsports speed hill climb track in Worcestershire, and organised by the Midland Automobile Club (MAC).

It is one of the oldest motorsports event, having started in 1905, and held events every year, except for the two World Wars.

It is also a notably steep course by today’s hill climb standards, rising 328ft / 100m over its 1000 yards / 914 metres length.

The track and course do not belong to MAC, it is leased from the local landowner. The original lease ran for 99 years, and in 2005, a new lease was signed for the next 99 years.

Action Man at the Land Rover Show

File: 2023009-0173

Land Rover Owner International Show 2023 at Belvoir Castle, near Grantham, Leicestershire, United Kingdom. Saturday 9th September 2023.

About the photograph.

The photograph was shot in colour, but there was too much strong sunlight and the photo needed a lot of dehaze setting, but then I thought to convert it into black and white while in Adobe Lightroom, for a more dramatic feel to what he was doing.

What happened in the photo was that his heavily modified Land Rover Defender (seen on the left) came up against a very large slope, and would not be able to drive up by itself, as the slope is far too steep.

So the driver gets out, and pulls out the cable from the winch motor on the front of his Defender, then here in the photo you see him climbing up the rough ground.

His plan is to climb over, tie the cable to any strongest support on the other side of the big lump of ground, so that he would get back in his car, and the winch would pull itself up the slope, then he could drive over it.

And that is what he did.

Land Rover Series III

File: 2018002-0010

During the Land Rover Owner International Show at the East of England Arena, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom. Saturday 15th September 2018.

About the photograph.

This is a Land Rover Series III.

Both the Series II and the Series III share a common side design, thus is harder to tell the difference between the two. The Series I have a different looks when seen from the side.

The best way to know if it is a Series II or a Series III would be to look at the front, as there is a difference design style between the II and III.

In 2017, I became a Land Rover owner and driver when I got myself a Land Rover Freelander. That is why I decided to go to this Land Rover show, hoping to pick up any spare parts for my Freelander, or pick up some information, and that was really what I was there for, to enjoy a day out for myself.

I bought along my camera in case I may find interesting shots, and figured to take some photos of various Land Rover models. I took this photo, but did not think to make notes of what model it is.

This is one of the many models on static display, not very far from the entrance to the showground.

About the overall subject.

Land Rover Series.

After the end of the Second World War, the luxury cars manufactured by the Rover Company was not in high demand, and raw materials were rationed for the rebuilding of the country.

Inspired by the Willys MB jeep, the Rover Company decided to design an off-roading four-wheel drive vehicle for light agricultural use, for the civilian market.

The design and development started in 1947, and by 1948 they rolled off their first Land Rover. At that time, it was simply called Land Rover which itself was a model name instead of a brand name.

By 1958, they designed and produced the second generation model, and decided to call the first model as the Series I, while the call the new one as the Series II (1958-1961). The Series II also included improvements which would become known as the Series IIA (1961-1971).

In 1971, they produced the third generation known as the Series III, which went on until 1985, when it was replaced with what is then known as the Defender.

The Official at Shelsley Walsh (2/2)

File: 2023005-0068

Shelsley Walsh, Worcestershire, England, United Kingdom, Saturday 3rd June 2023.

About the photograph.

This is one of the officials whose duty is mainly to test the cars’ emission levels, and also to check the cars, then make records of their findings, before the cars head over to the starting line, for the speed hill climb.

I shot in colour, but it was a very strong sunny day, and I mistakenly had my white balance set wrong, however I used Adobe Lightroom to convert it into black and white, and then use Adobe Photoshop to crop the shots, for a story-telling feel to the photos.

This official is checking the emission levels of a Peugeot RWL, Motorsport 205 driven by Stephen Baxter, before filling in the paperwork, and letting the car move over to the starting line for the speed hill climb.

The event they are attending is called the Best of British event during the weekend, at the Shelsley Walsh Speed Hill Climb track.

About the photograph.

Those two are having a discussion moment while working on the car in front of them.

According to the program guide I have, the car is OMS 3000 driven by Nigel Pitt.

This was a landscape format photo, and I cropped it to portrait format, to focus on the two mechanics talking.

The event they are attending is the Best of British event during the weekend, at the Shelsley Walsh Speed Hill Climb track.

I shot the event in colour, but decided to convert the photo into black and white, plus cropping, and hope for a dramatic story-telling feel to the photo.

Modified Land Rover Defender in Action

File: 2023009-0027

Land Rover Owner International Show 2023 at Belvoir Castle, near Grantham, Leicestershire, United Kingdom. Saturday 9th September 2023.

About the photograph.

This is a customised Land Rover Defender modified for extreme off-roading. I have no idea what kind of engine it got, and I don’t have much information about it, as I didn’t get a programme for this event.

Here in the photo, it is seen showing off its off-roading abilities over some kind of a mock up rough terrain, during a live display show in the arena.

About the day.

In the early morning, I woke up, got ready, and took a three hours drive to Belvoir Castle, but that morning was already very warm, with a cloudless sky and the sun beating down on the land.

By the time I got there, I was already feeling very hot. I worn light coloured t-shirt, lightweight trousers, and a lot of sun cream, plus plenty of water.

Land Rover Owner International Show.

Land Rover Owner, often abbreviated as LRO, is a British monthly magazine for Land Rover enthusiasts, published by a company based in Peterborough. The full title is often Land Rover Owner International.

It first started in July 1987 by a group of East Anglian businessmen, and was a mainly black and white 40 pages magazine. By the mid-1990s, it was bought by a publishing group, and became one of the popular Land Rover magazines.

The Land Rover Owner International Show is a yearly event ran by the magazine, and usually during the weekend in September. It features many various Land Rover vehicles on display, and includes an action arena for Land Rover drivers to display their driving skills.

Bore dydd Mercher 8 Chwefror 2023.

About the photograph.
Am y ffotograffau.

This is Olivia, a model I booked for a two-hours outdoors photo-shoot, outside of Newport (Welsh: Casnewydd).

Here, she is posing in a winter outfit containing a size 10, long, light brown faux fur coat from Astraka of London, along with her own turtleneck jumper, jeans with shiny strips down the sides, and white trainers.

Here, she is posing outside of the Land Rover Freelander, in one photo, she is leaning on the car, and in the other, she is leaning on the driver door.

The vehicle is a 2005 registered Land Rover Freelander.

The location is the car park next to St Julian Inn, on the south bank of the River Usk.

With special thanks to the manager/owner of St Julian Inn for giving me permissions to use the car park.

As Olivia was booked for two-hours, we stayed at this location only for 50 minutes before moving to another location. Nothing wrong there, just that I needed a change of background. Those will be uploaded to my Photostream in near future.

About the subject.
Am y pwnc.

Astraka of London was a faux fur manufacturer. It first started as Alfred Morris Furs in 1898 in London, before moving to Buckinghamshire in the 1940s.

By about the 1960s, the company employed about 400 people, and produced faux fur coats, selling to top shops like Selfridges and exporting all over the world.

But by about 1988, it went into receivership and closed down.

There are very limited details about the company on the Internet, specially as the company closed down before home Internet and the World Wide Web became more popular.

There are barely enough photos of women posing next to a Freelander, so my aim is to create some more of this, especially for the Freelander owners and fans to enjoy.

In addition to this being a “cars and girls” kind of photography which is the main role, there are other roles, including photographs needed for a graphic design project, which will be shown in near future, as well as fashion style photographs.

Land Rover Series I at Ashdown Camp by jacklowry47

Land Rover Series I at Ashdown Camp

File: 2022003-0164

Wartime in the Vale 2022 event. Ashdown Camp, at Ashdown Farm, off Badsey Road, Evesham, Worcestershire, England, United Kingdom, on Saturday 25th of June 2022.

About this photograph.

This is a Land Rover Series I built sometime between 1948-1958. This model is likely to have been built from 1950 onward, judging from the design of the headlights.

The Rover Company, founded in 1878 started building bicycles, then by 1904, they moved into the automobile industry by making motorcycles, and later cars.

After the Second World War, they were inspired by the Willys MB jeep, and decided to make their own mass-produced civilian four-wheel drive cars, with a sturdier fully box-welded frame, for agricultural use.

The engine is likely to be a 2.0 L petrol or diesel engine with 4 speed manual gear, and it is a two door body style with an optional soft roof.

When the company started building them, there were simply called Land Rover until 1958. Once they started introducing later models, the first model was then commonly referred as Series I when they built the next model, they called those as the Series II.

The name Land Rover eventually became a separate brand name on its own, and also became a company in its own right. Earlier Land Rover models were then commonly referred as the Series models, to distinguish them from later production models such as the Defender.

About the event.

Wartime in the Vale is an annual re-enactment event, held at the former Second World War camp, next to the town of Evesham, during the summer. The event is organised by the Military Vehicle Trust – South Midlands Area.

The event is held during the weekend, and believed to have at least more than 500 military vehicles of various eras, but mostly of First and Second World Wars, on display as well as re-enactment events in the main arena, including blank firing of weapons. They even have a flypast over the area.

The Ashdown Camp is a 40 acres site, with some old WWII era buildings, mainly huts, located near the Ashdown Farm, just to the east of Evesham.

About the photograph.

This is Olivia, a model I booked for a two-hours outdoors photo-shoot, in the countryside north of Newport (Welsh: Casnewydd).

Olivia is wearing a winter outfit containing of a Size S black faux fur jacket with leopard patterns collar and cuffs, from Leana of London. The company is likely to have been a manufacturer or a trader, but there is not much details about Leana, and the company may have closed down before the Internet became popular.

She is also wearing a white cowl neck jumper, the design of the cowl gives the illustration of wearing a scarf, along with black trousers, and white ankle height trainers.

Here, she is holding a Starbucks white coffee cup, posing as if she’s the driver who simply ordered a Starbucks take away, stopped out in the countryside, for rest and coffee. The photo shoots serve either as standalone photos or graphic design assets.

The vehicle is a 2005 Land Rover Freelander.

Land Rover Series IIB Forward Control by jacklowry47

Land Rover Series IIB Forward Control

File: 2018002-0402

Land Rover Owner International Show at the East of England Arena, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom. Saturday 15th September 2018.

About the photograph.

This is a Land Rover Series IIB Forward Control. For more details about the vehicles, see section titled About the overall subject below.

Here, this Series IIB FC is outfitted to serve as a fire engine, most likely to be an airport fire engine, rather than a general fire brigade one. This is just a guess based on the reason it’s painted in white rather than red.

I don’t have an in-depth information about this very vehicle, I’ve no idea who owns this, when did it first enter services, and so on.

Here, this white Series IIB FC fire engine is seen parading around the muddy truck, around the arena, for spectators to see.

About the overall subject.

Land Rover Series IIB Forward Control.

With special thanks to @DanielWarden for pointing out to me that this is a Series IIB FC, not as I mistakenly thought, a 101 FC.

In the beginning, the Series IIA Forward Control is basically a Land Rover Series IIA 109 wheelbase 4x4 car.

They simply remove the body and the cockpit, leaving generally the engine and chassis, then fit a cab over the engine in order to give more space behind the cab, thus giving the illustration that they turned the car into a truck.

Point of note: While the cab is positioned above the engine, the steering wheel is positioned slightly ahead of the front wheels, hence the term Forward Control.

It was first launched in 1962, with a 2.25-litre petrol engine, and 109 in wheelbase. About up to 2500 were made, most have a utility body, but a lot of them had customised bodywork done.

Later on in 1966, they made the Series IIB Forward Control, with a 2.25-litre diesel engine as an option. Heavy modifications were done to the model, to improve it, including increasing the wheelbase to 110” and production finally ended in 1974
