It’s Never the End of a Road When You’re at the Beginning!

While walking and exploring along Whitehead Street in Key West, Florida, near the 0 Mile Marker for US Highway 1 where I took in this scene. The image is looking to the northwest, with the marker sign prominently displayed in the center. The surrounding streets adds to the urban ambiance, creating that blend of nature and city life.

Mountains as a Backdrop for the City of Durango

A setting of urban exploration in Durango, Colorado, one early afternoon while walking along Main Ave. My thought in composing this image was to capture a view looking across the street intersection, using the hotel building front and cars present, along with the mountain and blue skies backdrop.

Hiker Crossing and Cars Along the Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park

While at a roadside pullout along the Skyline Drive with a view looking down the road to the west-northwest. This is in Shenandoah National Park around a location Google Maps lists as Low Gap. The image itself was a random happening with cars on the road as well as one hiker beginning to cross along the Dickey Ridge Trail in this part of the national park.

The image itself is slightly out of focus as I was attempting to capture the hiker before he crossed the road and hadn't had a chance to select a focal point prior to releasing the shutter. But I did like that out-of-focus look as it had an artistic feel to the image.

Exploring Durango!

While walking the streets of Durango and taking in the sights of the city with the storefronts around. I captured this while waiting at an intersection crossing and a view looking to the northeast. My thought in composing this image was to have this urban setting filled with people walking about and cars (or other type vehicles) filling in those “empty” spaces in between the stores along the sidewalk and streets.

Heading off to Explore Shenandoah National Park!

While at a roadside pull off next to the Front Royal park entrance sign to Shenandoah National Park. The view is looking to the east down the Skyline Drive where one Jeep Wrangler was heading and several other park cars off in the distance around the Dickey Ridge Trailhead. My thought in composing this image was to use the road as a leading line and have the trees all around, adding to the setting and view ahead.

I did some initial post-processing work making adjustments to contrast, brightness and saturation while playing around as I learned how to work with DxO PhotoLab 7. I then exported a TIFF image to Nik Color Efex Pro 7 where I added a Polarization, Foliage and Pro Contrast filter for that last effect on the image captured.

Getting out There in Silverton, Colorado!

A setting looking to the southwest while taking in views and walking around the city of Silverton, Colorado. In composing the image, I took advantage of the center passing lane to set up and align myself to the city street, while using the mountainside and ridge as a backdrop for this urban setting.

Main Ave in Durango

While walking the streets of Durango and taking in the sights of the city with the storefronts around and mountains as a backdrop. In order to capture this image and align myself with the streets and store fronts, I was able to stand in the center turn lane at an intersection. I mulled over the idea of waiting until cars passed by but then I figured that they added to the setting with urban exploration in exploring this city in southeastern Colorado. The rest was metering the image to not blow any of the highlights on this bright, sunny afternoon, while still being able to pull the more shadowed areas later on in post-production. I used the perspective tool in DxO PhotoLab 7 to straighten out any distortions with the wider angle capture.

Walking the Streets of Silverton with Mountains and Blue Sky Sunshine

A setting looking to the northeast up Colorado State Highway 110 (Greene Street) while walking the streets and exploring the city of Silverton, Colorado. The idea for this image had come from something I'd seen many years ago from a similar image of Telluride further north in Colorado. The idea was to capture a look down the store fronts and street with a backdrop of mountains beyond the city buildings. With this image, I pulled back on the focal length, so that I could include buildings on both sides of the streets while angling my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward. I knew that I could address the perspective tool in DxO PhotoLab 7 to correct the alignment and distortions later with the buildings in post-production.

Eight Miles of Road Ahead

While at a roadside pullout along California State Route 127 with a view looking to the north. My thought on composing this image was to stand in the middle of the highway, obviously watching for traffic, but to capture a look as straight and aligned as possible with the highway in the centerline. I then squatted down low and captured a look with a focal length a little ways down the road to bring more into focus throughout the entirety of the image and setting. I loved the backdrop of the more distant mountains, and the way the road seemed to go down and then up in that direction.

Traffic and Drivers Along US Route 95 in Nevada

A roadside pullout looking to the south as cars passed by. What I wanted to capture with this image was to use the highway as a leading line and include some other Mojave Desert type relief with the ridges and peaks on both sides of the highway, and then off in the distance.

Wide-Angle, Panoramic Feel to an Image Captured

While at a roadside pullout at Forrest Gump Point with a new looking to the southwest down the road with a backdrop of the sandstone buttes and formations present in the Monument Valley. This is along U.S. Route 163 not far from Halchita, Utah. My thought on composing this image was to have a view looking down the road and center myself with the stripe leading off into the distance. I decided to angle my Nikon SLR, camera slightly downward and create more of a sweeping view, bringing the horizon higher into the image. I wanted the image to have a panoramic, wide angle view, so I knew that I would cut off some of the foreground to my front.

I Love the Roads Taken in Life

While at a roadside pullout along California State Route 127 with a view looking to the south down the highway. In composing this image, I squatted down and then aligned my Nikon SLR camera with the highway centerline. I chose a focal point a little ways down the road so that I could bring more of the entire image into focus. I later worked with control points in DxO PhotoLab 6 and then made some adjustments to bring out the contrast, saturation and brightness I wanted. I cropped a portion of the highway foreground to bring out more of a wide-angle, panoramic feel for the final image.

Taking in Views Outside of Rogue Valley International Medford Airport

While standing outside the main terminal area with the view looking towards the southeast. What I wanted to capture with this image was kind of a sentimental, postcard type setting with the view beyond to the mountains and blue skies and clouds above.

Open Road Bringing People Together from All Walks of Life

While at a roadside pullout along Kelbaker Rd with a view looking to the south. The setting is looking down the road in this portion of the Mojave Desert while using the road and center stripe as a leading line to more distant views of ridges and peaks of the Central Mojave Ranges and Bristol Mountains. In composing this image, I walked around until I could align myself properly with the center line and bring out a straight ahead of view, without distortions left or right as I held the camera. I then squatted down low and picked a focal point about midway down the road, so that I could have more of the distant portions of the road in focus. The nearby road and gravel weren't as important in my mind to keep in focus. I later cropped portions of the foreground and a little of the skies to create a wide-angle, panoramic view with this image.

Roadways Should Have Mountains Beauty for Those Driving (Banff National Park)

At a roadside pullout along the Banff-Windermere Highway near the Castle Mountain Viewpoint. This is in Banff National Park with a view looking to the southwest to the ridges and peaks of Storm Mountain. With this image, I decided to include the road with all the signage and light poles to add perspective for the mountains towering above. I zoomed in with the focal length, so that I would include only the mountainside landscape to my front.
