Icelandic horses grazing the meandering Bruárá River off the isolated Laugarvatnsvegur road. Icelandic horses are often pony sized (13 to 14 hands. Icelandic horses are among the purest of breeds, dating back for over 1000 years. The Bráurá River is fed by spring creeks (bergvatnsá) and empties into the larger Hvita River. The name means "Bridge River" for its bridge about midway along its 38 km (24 mi) course. Iceland has made the entire length of the Brúará and its banks a protected nature area.
