Cathedral of the Nativity of Our Lady (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Nascente), Milan, April 22, 2025
Bergamo | Lombardy | ITALY
The Duomo di Bergamo, or Cattedrale di Sant'Alessandro, is the city's main cathedral, dedicated to Saint Alexander, Bergamo’s patron saint. Its history dates back to the 5th century, evolving from early Christian churches into the Cathedral of San Vincenzo, which later merged with Sant'Alessandro after Venetian fortifications led to its demolition in 1561. The current structure was rebuilt in the 15th century, with notable renovations in the 17th and 19th centuries, culminating in a Neoclassical façade completed in 1889.
Its Latin cross layout houses artistic treasures, including paintings by Giovan Battista Moroni, Andrea Previtali, and Tiepolo, alongside marble inlays by Andrea Fantoni. The tiara of Pope John XXIII, adorned with diamonds, pearls, and rubies, remains one of the cathedral’s most prized artefacts. The cathedral remains an integral part of the city’s historical and artistic identity, standing alongside the Palazzo della Ragione and the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Piazza Duomo.

The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo Alta is one of the city's most stunning and historically significant churches. Built in 1137, it was constructed as a vow to the Virgin Mary by the people of Bergamo, who sought protection from a devastating plague epidemic. The basilica’s Romanesque exterior contrasts beautifully with its Baroque interior, which features elaborate stuccoes, frescoes, and wooden inlays designed by Lorenzo Lotto, a renowned Renaissance artist. The church also houses the funeral monument of Gaetano Donizetti, Bergamo’s famous opera composer, making it a pilgrimage site for music lovers.
One of its most unique architectural features is the absence of a central entrance, as the façade was originally connected to the Bishop’s Palace. Instead, visitors enter through four lateral doors, including the Porta dei Leoni Rossi and Porta dei Leoni Bianchi, which are guarded by marble lion sculptures.
During Kalamazoo Art Fair today, the First Presbyterian Church invited people inside to walk through and tour their sanctuary. They even let *me* in! After years of taking pictures from the outside, in the dark and the cold and the snow, I finally got to see the other side of the rose window stained glass from the inside of the church.
