Mrs Shillabeer and family arrived at Port Sinclair on April 2 by the Wookata for their new home at Bagster. What a pity that the Bagster school is closed, as there are many more children now.

A nice little crowd attended at the Bagster church on Sunday to say farewell to the Rev. Humphery, who leaves by the boat this week. We are sorry to part with Mr Humphery so soon, and it is a pity he could not have stayed another twelve months at least. If Mr Peters (his successor) becomes as popular among the people no complaint will be raised against him.

However the word “Son” has been crossed through and replaced with Boarder for Edmund as well.

On the 1901 Census of England & Wales the 7 year old Edmund G D Fromant was recorded living on Angel Street, Hadleigh in the household of his parents Henry, (46, a Solicitors Clerk, born Trumpington, Cambridgeshire) and Emily, (aged 45, born Hadleigh). On the 1911 Census Henry, (56) and Emily, (55), were recorded living at Guthrum House, 145 Angel Street, Hadleigh. The couple have been married 18 years and have had 2 children, both then still alive.

The birth of an Edmund George D. Fromant, mothers’ maiden name not transcribed, was registered with the Civil authorities in the Cosford District in Q3 of 1893.

On the day…………………………….

The Gresham School website has two versions of the circumstances of his death.

Lieutenant Barratt was reported missing at the Somme on 7 July 1916, and The Gresham magazine says that he was buried by a shell, but found to be unconscious when recovered. The particular spot where this happened had to be abandoned during the ensuing chaos, and nothing more was heard of him. The circumstances of his death were controversial, and his father requested his identity tags and letters but was informed none were on the body when it was buried. Geoffrey’s service record has a page headed ‘Not to be communicated outside the War Office’ which has many inaccuracies and includes the statements of Private S. Cattell describing the discovery of a photograph when burying the body. The picture was sent to the News of the World and subsequently identified by his mother. On the same page as Cattell’s statement is a memo crossed through with a clear black line, reading “Private Mitchell states that 2nd Lt. G.R. Barratt had just ordered him to lead on and that having proceeded about 15 yards he saw a large shell explode close to this officer and blow him completely to pieces.” It is presumed that this story was considered too harrowing to tell the family.
www.greshamsatwar.co.uk/RollofHonour.aspx?RecID=30&Ta...

7th July 1916

The 17th Div with three battalions assaulted two German trenches south of the village OF Contalmaison, between it and Mametz Wood. 9th Bn, Northumberland Fusiliers and the right flank of 10th Bn, Lancashire Fusiliers (both 52 Bde) were held up by their own bombardment falling short. Then finding the barbed wire intact they were forced to retire. Some Lancashire Fusiliers took Pearl Alley trench and entered Contalmaison but were driven back by a German attack at 7am. 52 Bde tried again at 8am with 12th Bn, Manchester Regt and 9th Bn, Duke of Wellington’s Regt attacking Quadrangle Support. The German attack had delayed their starting and their barrage had lifted so the attack failed due to heavy MG fire from Mametz Wood.

On the right, 50 Bde of 17th Div attacked the west side of Mametz Wood but were driven back with heavy losses. Another attempt was made at 8pm, this time by 51 Bde. This attack was again driven back with the Bde suffering 400 casualties.

A plan for a further attack during the night by 17th Div on Contalmaison was abandoned.
