Norwich Theatre Royal 6579

Norwich, Theatre Royal. Designed by W H Barton in 1935, but modernised and extended on more than one occasion since. It replaced a much older theatre on the same site which had opened in 1758, and after much alteration, burned down in 1935. Although mainly used for theatre, the Royal operated as the Essoldo Cinema 1956-67, ending when the building was purchased by the local council. The auditorium originally had four boxes on the side wall slips, with poor sightlines, and which have now been removed. A major upgrade in 1992 replaced the stage and back-stage areas, another in 2007 reorganised the auditorium and front-of-house. It currently seats around 1,300 on two levels, with excellent sightlines throughout.
