Description 📄:
It is mid-spring and a new day has just begun in Lower Austria. The famous Kalte-Rinne viaduct, with its two-level arches, also pictured on the 20 schilling banknotes, is crossed by a Railjet train operated by the Czech railway company České dráhy. The train travels through hills and mountains on one of the most historically important railway lines in the world. This is the Semmering Railway, which not only claims to be the first standard-gauge mountain railway in Europe, but also the first railway line to be recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with its surroundings. The Semmering Railway connects Gloggnitz to Mürzzuschlag, two towns only 21 km apart in a straight line, but which required twice the distance, or 42 km, to be connected by rail. The route crosses over 100 bridges and viaducts and passes through 16 tunnels, with most of the route having a gradient of 20‰ and a maximum gradient of 28‰. It is currently a very important route, as it connects the Austrian capital, Vienna, with Graz, Italy and Slovenia, even though the Semmering Base Tunnel is already under construction and will cut through the mountain route from 2030.
