Telephoto Time

Our new telephoto lens proved it's worth as we look across the Corbin yard at L662, having just went on duty and arrived at their power.

"Caught in the Silo Now"

In the Silo, in the silo-lo. In the silo, in the silo-lo. R614 has just passed beneath the old Lynch 2 silo loader, bright future CSX 354 trailing.

Bacon Creek Bright Future

G837, a reroute over the KD and CC, passes beneath the Bacon Creek signal set as it approaches the south end of Corbin. We wanted to be on the right side of the morning light for the shot, however this cost us around 45 minutes of waiting in the truck afterwards as the refueling process blocked the crossing. That's the price you pay for a photo sometimes.

Bright Future off the KD

G837 passes beneath the Bacon Creek signal set as it eases into the Corbin yard, led by a classic bright future CW44AC. We shot the 524 over 3 years prior when it lead 45 Eastman empties past the Baxter Tower on ML1- one of the last trains to run on it prior to its abandonment. This caught us completely by surprise, but we happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Further Back

Today's crew has spotted their Lynch empties a bit further than usual, prompting for a bit more of an interesting shot unveiling the train stretched around the curve as the light power passes by.

Coal Dust Kisses

Compared to the MONSTER stockpile, the pair of GE's leading R614 look small as they bring another set of empties in to be loaded.

Sunrise & Coal Dust

The sun pounds upon the foggy overcast as R614 rattles through the Cave Branch complex with another string of empties for Lynch 3. With the exhaust billowing from the old workhorse, she makes another visit into the heart of her home.

Corbin Consistency

L662's power heads out to spin the wye before taking their train north towards Patio. We've hit it lucky the last few visits to Corbin in finding the local on the move.

Wiggle-Tail's & YN2's

A "Wiggle-Tail" CAT truck is awaiting it's turn to pass beneath Lynch 3 before R614 steals the show in the early Eastern Kentucky morning.

Foggy n' Fox

R614 eases its train up to the Lynch 3 loadout to begin loading, Conductor Randy Fox riding his lead engine before heading up into the booth. The cars were stretched a bit farther than usual, allowing for this shot to be made.

Goin' To Work

L662 departs Corbin with orders to work Lily and then clear up at Bourne for southbound C700, before backtracking to work London and then venture north to Ford. A fairly fresh YN3C GP40-3 now leads, the power of which has just spun the wye, which is a drastic contrast to the classic C&O paint this unit once wore.

Weeds of Change

CSX 354 still wears the classic bright future paint scheme, staged at the end of the line on the Cloverlick spur. The only indication of the rails presence is drawn to the recently-placed sign that simply reads "Stop Here, Then Continue," warning any engineer of the danger that lies ahead should he take his engines further. In the thicket of trees ahead, the rails end beneath the overgrowth of weeds.

Red Stained Coastline

An age-old SCL boxcar is seen in Loyall on the end of a work train, it's SCL lettering stained by red paint and rust strewn across its m any years of service.

Heat Distortion

G837 rounds the curve as its train stretches back beyond Woodbine. The heat distortion made for an interesting frame here.

37 Relics by MicahTurnerPhotography45

37 Relics

Portal 37 was the first mine to grace the Cloverlick holler under US Steel, and for the massive coal tonnage produced, Lynch 2 was constructed. As R614 eases back to their train, Lynch 2 and the few stackers out of frame are all the relics that remain from the massive operation of number 37.

DPU's For Georgia

C700 spots it's mid-DPU for fueling on the north end of Corbin before rolling on into the yard to await an outbound crew.

Ahead of the Tub

A "Wiggle-Tail" is seen ahead of a unit train as the hopper within Lynch 3 is cleared to prevent any unwanted mixture of coal blending with that for the customer. Definitely not your typical 100-ton tub.
