And so was Michael Jackson....
In 1955, the largest statue ever constructed of Joseph Stalin outside of the Soviet Union was completed at the edge of LetnΓ‘ Park. However, the next year the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev gave his famous 'secret' speech saying the Stalin may have not been that nice after all (i.e., killed an awful lot of people and had created a big cult of personality around himself). Shortly afterwards statues of Stalin became distinctly unfashionable in most communist countries. In late 1962 a series of explosions brought the statue down. The plinth (pictured here) remains and a giant metronome was placed on the site in 1991. A statue of Michael Jackson also temporarily occupied the site at the start of his HIStory World Tour in 1996.
