First I incised various runes and figures onto the surface of the wood, then I painted it with inexpensive silver metallic paint---two coats.

Scythe-4-sanddowel-s

I sanded the cut, and then (not shown) I cut an additional groove to fit the notched blade, the supportive piece on the blade.

You can angle the bottow edge of the cut. I did, but then changed which side faced the dowel, and you can see the mistake later when it is screwed together. All hidden in the end, though!

I bought a 1/2"x6"x36" piece of balsa wood, which I cut into two curved pieces, the thinner one to add structural support to the blade. I used an Xacto to cut it, tracing thru some tissue paper with a dull pencil to incise the pattern on the wood. I sanded it a bit.

I think thick foam-core board could also be used.

Scythe-3-cut-dowel-s

I bought a 6-foot pine dowel, 1-5/8" thick. I cut off 5 inches to fit a 5'4" person. the finished scythe looks best if it is slightly taller than the costume wearer.

I cut a slot to fit the blade. See the last photos in this set to see the angle of the blade in relation to the dowel.
