Greek Archaic period, ca. 625-610 BCE
East Greek, made on Chios
Chian Wild Goat Style, attributed to the Painter of the Aphrodite Bowl (name-vase; Lemos)
Excavated in the Sanctuary of Aphrodite at Naukratis (see on Pleiades), Nile Delta, Lower Egypt
The inside of the lip bears a Greek graffito dedication:
Σωστρατος με ανεθηκεν τηφροδιτηι[
"Sostratos dedicated me to Aphrodite [---"
Possibly the grandfather of the Sostratos mentioned by Herodotus, and/or the Sostratos who dedicated an anchor at Gravisca and a plate at Pyrgi; or just possibly the latter dedicated an heirloom at Naukratis.
