What is today the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County International Airport was completed in 1929 but the first plane did not land there until Feb. 22, 1930. The airport was dedicated on Sept. 22, 1930. Around that time this structure served as the first terminal and hangar. Later the airport became the Romulus Army Air Field during World War II. Following the war it eventually became Detroit's primary commercial airport.
The image above was made from a passing excursion train on the Norfolk Southern (former Wabash Railroad) route to Detroit from St. Louis and Kansas City. In researching the history of this structure I found it was demolished in early 2018.
