Displaced gravestone inscribed: In Affectionate Remembrance of MARY, daughter of JOHN and ELIZABETH HARGREAVES of Skipton who departed this life April 4th 1862, aged 32 years

"Her sufferings all are at an end,
She with exulting breath,
Ascribed her conquest to the lamb,
Her victory to his death"

I assume that this is a variation of verse 3 of the Hymn 'The Saints in Glory', words by Isaac Watts (1709):

"We ask them whence their victory came:
They, with united breath,
Ascribe their conquest to the Lamb,
Their triumph to his death"

Displaced gravestone inscribed: In Memory of SOPHIA MATILDA the beloved wife of ABRAHAM CALVERT of Skipton who died on the 29 of August 1859 aged 76 years.
Also of the above named ABRAHAM CALVERT of Skipton who died the 26th day of April 1862 aged 72 years.
Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord for they may rest from their labours and their works do follow them (Passage from Revelations Ch14 v13)

Run-ins with the natives often resulted in death for the German settlers of Fredericksburg, Texas, before the 1870's. Jacob Berg was "killed by Indians" on April 4, 1862.

Martha's parents are also buried in this cemetery; they outlived her by more than 20 years.

Two baby girls dying one year apart equals one heartbroken family. A reality back then, sure. I thank my lucky stars for the development of vaccinations.
