The cluster of ten palms (Sabal palmetto) at D.I.R. is a favorite subject for a landscape photo. Although photographed many times by many, every sunrise is unique. Obscured by fog and mist for a few minutes after sunrise, the sun finally begins to break through. The low-lying mist is typical at this location in the early morning.

The Black-crowned Night-Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) is a medium-sized heron distributed worldwide. They inhabit fresh and salt-water wetlands and feed in the shallows at night. They are about 64 cm (25 inches) in length. The birds of this species that breed in the northern extremes of North America, Europe, and Asia migrate south in winter. For this reason, we see many more of these birds in Florida during the North American winter.

The Belted Kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon) occurs throughout North America, including northern Canada and Alaska, and is commonly seen near inland or coastal waters. During winter, they migrate south to the southern United States, Mexico, Central America, Colombia, Venezuela, and the Caribbean. In South Florida, Belted Kingfishers are present only during the winter migration.
