National Poetry Day

We're Here - Self-Appointed Geniuses

The tomato plant photo was taken a few years ago, when my friend and I were left in charge of her husband's prized tomato plants. We managed to see off the Marmande plants. I wrote the 'poem' at the time. I thought it fitted today's theme so I've combined the two.

Creekside purple by Thomas Cizauskas

For spring's coming sway.

A tiny common blue violet (viola sororia), blooming in...

Henderson Park
City of Tucker, Georgia, USA.
12 March 2025.

***************
Photographer's notes:
☞ This is a closeup. The common blue violet was only one centimeter in diameter; it appears much larger in the image than it did in 'real' life.
☞ Then again, the flower might be Viola hirsutula —commonly known as southern woodland violet— another perennial species of small violets found in the eastern United States.

***************
Commendation / Rejection:
☞ On 13 March 2025, Flickr's editors selected this image for inclusion in Flickr's daily Explore feature (85th out of 500 selected).

☞ On the other hand, on 22 March 2025, a moderator for the Flickr group "GEORGIA, THE PEACH STATE" rejected this photo for NOT displaying "scenic beauty of the State of Georgia, USA." It's challenging to fathom any rationale whatsoever except for a personal political vendetta.

A 125-year-old chapel by Thomas Cizauskas

A 125-year-old chapel

Chapel on Sycamore
Decatur (Sycamore Heights ), Georgia, USA.
21 December 2024.

***************
In 2021, Decatur First United Methodist Church sold its historic chapel —"possibly the city of Decatur's oldest public structure"— to law firm Williams Teusink.

Made of granite quarried in Stone Mountain, the chapel was completed in 1899 on the site of the original wooden church erected in 1823-26. It remained First Methodist’s primary chapel until 1967 when the present adjacent sanctuary opened. The congregation continued to use the chapel for smaller religious services, special events, weddings, and funerals.

The law firm has restored the chapel, retooling it for use as/for community theater, a small concert venue, educational forums, and community gatherings, "respectful of its history as a place of worship." The church retains the use of the chapel on a part-time basis.

Williams Teusink previously won a Historic Preservation Commission design award for their renovation of the High House, built in 1830 and "thought to be DeKalb County’s oldest building and Decatur’s first two-story house."
