▶ In 2021, Decatur First United Methodist Church sold its historic chapel —"possibly the city of Decatur's oldest public structure"— to law firm Williams Teusink.
Made of granite quarried in Stone Mountain, the chapel was completed in 1899 on the site of the original wooden church erected in 1823-26. It remained First Methodist’s primary chapel until 1967 when the present adjacent sanctuary opened. The congregation continued to use the chapel for smaller religious services, special events, weddings, and funerals.
The law firm has restored the chapel, retooling it for use as/for community theater, a small concert venue, educational forums, and community gatherings, "respectful of its history as a place of worship." The church retains the use of the chapel on a part-time basis.
Williams Teusink previously won a Historic Preservation Commission design award for their renovation of the High House, built in 1830 and "thought to be DeKalb County’s oldest building and Decatur’s first two-story house."
