From the distance, one can see the wind tower (called in Iran “badgir”) from the Dowlat Abad garden, former residence of the Persian monarch Karim Khan Zand. At over 33m in height, it is the tallest of its kind in the world. Badgir is found everywhere in Yazd and was essential in residential structures to withstand the heat of the desert. Its old system works like a natural air conditioner. The higher the tower, the more effective. Its ducts at the top capture the slightest breeze, taking it to the rooms at the bottom. There is usually a water mirror in front of it, contributing even more to the freshness.
