Brown Thrasher

Spotting a Brown Thrasher (Toxostoma rufum) in a tangle of bushes can be a fun adventure! Once you see one, you might be surprised by how this boldly patterned, long-legged bird can stay so well hidden. They have a serious look, thanks to their strong, slightly curved bill and bright yellow eyes. Did you know they’re the only thrasher species found east of Texas? These lively birds are incredible singers, boasting one of the largest song repertoires of any North American songbird. They can sing over 1,100 different types of songs and even mimic the calls of other birds! If you want to attract Brown Thrashers to your backyard, offering food is a great idea. They love to visit feeders or scavenge for fallen seeds on the ground, especially if there’s some dense cover nearby. Planting shrubs that produce berries can also draw them in. Happy birdwatching!
