GREAT BLUE HERON - Nicomekl River

South Surrey, BC Canada

The great blue heron is the largest heron native to North America. Among all extant herons, it is surpassed in size only by the goliath heron (Ardea goliath) and the white-bellied heron (Ardea insignis). It exhibits a minor degree of sexual dimorphism; males are slightly larger than females, but otherwise the sexes are not easily outwardly distinguishable.

Notable features of great blue herons include slaty (gray with a slight azure blue) flight feathers, red-brown thighs, and a paired red-brown and black stripe up the flanks; the neck is rusty-gray, with black and white streaking down the front; the head is paler, with a nearly white face, and a pair of black or slate plumes runs from just above the eye to the back of the head. The feathers on the lower neck are long and plume-like; it also has plumes on the lower back at the start of the breeding season.

WARD'S PUBLIC MARINA - Elgin Heritage Farm by Sonja Peterson Ph♡tography

WARD'S PUBLIC MARINA - Elgin Heritage Farm

South Surrey, BC Canada

WARD'S PUBLIC MARINA - is a small civic marina a few miles up the Nicomekl River from Crescent Beach in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. It started as a farm, and became a marina after WWII when the Ward family added a couple of sections of float to their dock so friends could tie up there also, and gradually expanded from there.

In 1985 the City of Surrey purchased Ward's Marina and the adjacent Canadian Museum of Flight and Transportation for a riverside park, now called ELGIN HERITAGE PARK, and Wards Marina became Ward's Public Marina, a civic marina operated by the City of Surrey.

LOW TIDE:
On really low tides there is about 30 inches of water on the west half of the floats, diminishing to a few inches at the east end. Keelboats use the west half of the float, and shallow draft outboard motorboats and multihulls which can sit on the mud without tipping over use the east half.

POLE BARN & HERITAGE ORCHARD c. 1900 - Elgin Heritage Park

South Surrey, BC Canada

This heritage barn was built ca. 1900 and is one of the last surviving barns of its kind.

Constructed from unmilled lumber, the Pole Barn features a midstrey canopy that allowed a fully loaded hay wagon to be driven through.

The barn stored hay, machinery and originally houses 6 draught horses, 1 bull, 1 sow and 4 to 6 dairy cows.

The barn is now home to a revamped display of antique agricultural tools, and its newest acquisition, a 1929 Advance-Rumely threshing machine. These machines were the work horse of many farms in Surrey. A thresher was used to sperate grain stalks and husks and simplified previously time-consuming labour executed by hand.

Threshers were first powered by horse and later by portable engines. It is one of the most significant artifacts in Surrey's collection.

GREAT BLUE HERON - Nicomekl River

A Great Blue Heron hunting for it's prey among the oyster shells in the shallow waters of the Nicomekl River at Ward's Public Marina in South Surrey, BC Canada

The Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) is the largest heron native to North America.

These herons have a distinctive blue-gray plumage, long legs, and a sinuous neck. They have a black stripe over their eye and a long, orangish-yellow bill.

They can reach a height of 45-54 inches (115-138 cm) with a wingspan of 66-79 inches (167-201 cm) 1. Males are slightly larger than females.

Great Blue Herons are commonly found near shores of open water and wetlands across North and Central America. They also inhabit the Caribbean and the Galápagos Islands.

They primarily feed on fish, but also eat amphibians, reptiles, small mammals, and insects. They hunt by wading slowly or standing still in shallow water, using their dagger-like bill to spear or seize prey.

In flight, they curl their neck into a tight "S" shape and have slow wingbeats. They often nest in colonies, building large stick nests high in trees.

Great Blue Herons are a fascinating sight in wetlands and coastal areas.
