12.02: 66228 heads West through Didcot Parkway with 6C23: T/ThO 10:15 Hayes to East Usk empty 4-wheel hoppers.
I had passed this at Hayes just before 10.00 am on my HST from Paddington, so had already copped it that day, (I was still copping a few Class 66s each day on this UK trip).
This was my fist photo off it, but I also photted it at Eastleigh on 03/07/2007 and running light engine through Frethun Yard on 21/05/2011 😊.
66228 was built at EMD in North America and delivered to the UK by ship, believed to be unloaded at Newport on 20 April 2000 (Works No.968702-228).
Delivery was to EWS - English, Welsh and Scottish Railway, who took 250 of these Class 66 sheds into service in 1998 to 2000.
EWS wanted reliability which they were not getting from the many 1st gen ex-BR locos they inherited when they bought most of BR's freight divisions.
Ed Burkhart, the American CEO who came over from EWS's owner Wisconsin Central, knew the reliability could be improved massively and was impressed with the Class 59s shipped to the UK by EMD.
To the horror of many UK enthusiasts, the Class 66s poured in and the older BR diesel locos were quickly retired.
Even those enthusiasts would now have to admit the reliability numbers for the sheds kill the older BR locos, as does their maintenance turnarounds.
EWS set up ECR - Euro Cargo Rail SAS in France, to compete with SNCF Fret when they opened the French freight competition up because of EU pressure.
In a dying freight market, they didn't really set the world on fire. But at one point, they had 60 Class 66s exported there as well as “officially” 60 Class 77 Eurosheds, some G2000s, G1206s and Bombardier Traxx 186s.
66228 was one of the UK locos transferred, arriving in April 2008.
By the time the Class 77s were being delivered, EWS had been sold to DB Schenker, (now DBC - DB Cargo), Deutsche Bahn's cargo division.
DBC sent about half of the Class 77s straight to Germany, as there was a need to replace many aging Ludmilla Class 232/233s and freight rabbits (215/225s).
They kept the ECR name until 2021, when it was rebranded as DB Cargo France.
66228 is still there over 17 years later, now aged 25 years old.
Last photo I saw in late July 2025, it still carries its ECR livery.
Concluding his prayerful study for the evening message, Pastor Calvin is awed with the Light removing the darkness.
"But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep." 1 Corinthians 15:20
Christ’s Resurrection is In itself a great marvel. Our Lord was assuredly dead—the Roman guards at the Cross took care that no condemned person escaped the death penalty. In our Lord’s case, His heart was pierced with a spear to make sure that no life remained in Him. Joseph begged for His body and, by the loving hands of those who were sure that He was dead, He was wrapped in spices and fine linen—and laid in the rocky tomb. There He lay in the heart of the earth for a portion of three days and nights. He was really dead and in the grave. He wore all the marks of decease—a napkin was bound about His head, and the linen clothes wrapped His limbs.
On the morning of the third day it was truly said, “The Lord has risen, indeed,” for He actually, literally and in very fact awoke to life, unbound the napkin and laid it by itself, leisurely folded His grave clothes and, when the angel had rolled away the stone from the mouth of the sepulcher, the First-Begotten from the dead came forth in a material body to live among His disciples for forty days!
"But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling clothing; and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead? He is not here, but He has risen.
Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.” And they remembered His words, and returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest." Luke 24:1-9
During the time of His sojourn, His Resurrection was established by many Infallible proofs—He was seen, heard, touched and handled. One of His disciples put his finger into the print of the nails and thrust his hand into His side. He possessed a real body, for He ate a piece of a broiled fish and of a honeycomb before them all. It was Jesus of Nazareth and, none other than He, who met His disciples at Galilee!
"Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the grave. And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it. And his appearance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. The guards shook for fear of him and became like dead men.
The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid; for I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified. He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said. Come, see the place where He was lying. Go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; and behold, He is going ahead of you into Galilee, there you will see Him; behold, I have told you.”" Matthew 28:1-7
The Resurrection of our Lord is glorious in contrast with His humiliation. It has in it sufficient Glory to redeem His passion from the shame which gathered about it. We read in Matthew 20:18, 19, how He was to be betrayed, condemned to death, delivered to the Gentiles, mocked, scourged and crucified. But we note that all the gloom of that dread tragedy is removed by the few words with which our Lord ended the story—“And the third day He shall rise again.”
The blaze of Resurrection lights up the whole length of the Valley of the Shadow of Death! His death wears no dishonor on its brow, for His rising again has set a diadem thereon! We celebrate Gethsemane and Calvary—and find no bitterness in all their grief—because death is swallowed up in the victory of Resurrection! The whole earthly life of Jesus, with its poverty, its slander, its sorrow, its scourging, its spitting, its crucifixion, is raised above all trace of dishonor by His glorious Resurrection!
"So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and *said to them, “Peace be with you.” And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord." John 20:19-20
His resurrection is glorious in its effects. He was “delivered for our offenses,” but, “He was raised again for our justification.” In death He discharged our debt. In Resurrection He exhibited the receipt of all our liabilities! He was Surety for us and, therefore, He smarted and went down to the prison of the grave. But by death He discharged His Suretyship and was set free! Our Lord has risen and, therefore, we shall rise in the day of His appearing.
The Breaker leads the way and behind the mighty champion the whole company of His redeemed pass through the portals of the tomb in the power of His Resurrection. The stone is rolled away for them as well as for Him. They cannot be held by the bonds of death, for He could not be detained a captive.
What a glory there is in our Lord’s Resurrection, when we further remember that He always lives to make intercession for us and, therefore, He is able to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him! The fullness of salvation comes to us because He has risen from the dead and is now making intercession for the transgressors!
O Brothers and Sisters, the Resurrection of Jesus is bright as the sun with glory! Faith in it thrills our hearts. Well might each line of our hymn end with a Hallelujah! When we say, one to another, “The Lord is risen, indeed,” we feel like singing all the time, for now our faith is not vain, we are not in our sins and those who have fallen asleep have not perished!
Amen and AMEN!
