170. The History of Route 170 by SW11simon

170. The History of Route 170

Route 170 has rather changed over the years. It started up in 1950 as a replacement for tram route 31 and ran from Wandsworth to Hackney via Battersea, Vauxhall, Westminster Bridge, Victoria Embankment, Aldwych, Bloomsbury, Old Street and Shoreditch. It was based at Wandsworth (WD) Garage, now the base for The Original Sightseeing Tour. It lost its Sunday service by 1953.

In 1959 route was extended from Hackney to Leyton linked to the trolleybus conversion programme and a Sunday service was re-introduced but only between Bloomsbury and Leyton Green. In May 1960 the Sunday service was re-numbered 170A and ran from Bloomsbury to Loughton Station. This turned into a summer working for a couple of years, with route 170 returning for winter and serving Bloomsbury to Leyton Green as before.

London Buses had some strange ways of doing things, and in 1964 it was the turn of the Saturday service to be withdrawn. It was replaced by new Monday to Saturday route 253A which ran from Finsbury Park to Bloomsbury. This arrangement carried on until 1968 when route 253A was withdrawn and route was 170 re-introduced on Saturdays.

A few changes in service pattern happened up until 1969 when the route lost its weekend and evening service and became Wandsworth to Bloomsbury, with peak workings to and from Shoreditch Church. Route 55 took over the withdrawn section. In 1971 it was diverted from Victoria Embankment to Whitehall, and terminated at Aldwych with peak extensions to Euston.

It stayed stable until 1981, when it was extended from Wandsworth to Roehampton. This replaced withdrawn routes 168 and 85A over this section. It was also re-routed via East Hill and Falcon Road to serve Clapham Junction. The Monday to Friday service became Roehampton to Clapham Junction (evenings), Aldwych (daytimes) or Euston (peaks.) A Saturday service was re-introduced from Roehampton to Clapham Junction, and extended to Vauxhall during shopping hours. Again, the service patterns amended a few times over the next few years.

1991 marked a big change. The route was chopped and shrunk. It became Roehampton to Clapham Junction and converted to Dennis Dart operation. Route 344 replaced it between Clapham Junction and Vauxhall but I don't believe the working from Lambeth Bridge (south side) to Aldwych was replaced.

The next change was in 2008 and it created the route we see today. Route 239, which had run between Clapham Junction and Victoria via North Battersea was withdrawn and route 170 extended to replace it. This does create a rather fiddly working around Clapham Junction, where it goes in a big circle to serve the station on both sides, but it solved an issue of too many buses standing at Clapham Junction.

It has operated from Stockwell Garage since 2002, and has a mixed allocation of Transbus Dart SLF's and ADL Enviro 200's. The Darts have a DP classification, as opposed to the normal LDP. They were bought by Blue Triangle before Go-Ahead took that company over and were refurbished for route 170 when route 66 was lost. DP200 is seen here starting a journey at Victoria.

The last time 10.8m buses appear on 315? | Go-Ahead London General DP200 (EU53PHY) on route 315 heading to stand

Route 315, subject to consultation will be extended to Peabody Hill rerouted at West Norwood shops via Robson Road, Park Hall Road, Croxted Road, Thurlow Park Road (A205), Thurlow Hill, Peabody Hill, Birbeck Hill and back to routeing towards Balham. Link to consultation: consultations.tfl.gov.uk/buses/route-315/

The extension could result in DPs not making the full route, however could do the Balham to West Norwood section. By the looks of it, route 315 could manage 10.2m buses on the extension section.

A common working that is the only unallocated working on 315 that has strayed excluding 10.8m SEs from 170.
