Australian Duskhawker Dragonfly

I took these photos at the back of our house in October last year.
In the top two photos the dragonfly had a moth on its back and in the bottom photo there appears to be an insect on one of its eyes.

Female Shadow Darner (Aeshna umbrosa) Exposed By the Light

While entering our apartment after eating out last night, we noticed a small swarm of about a dozen dragonflies feeding on the wing right by our apartment so I got my net. I used flash on this photo to get the details. I guess this insect didn't like the flash; she flew away immediately after I took the photo to return to the shadows that this species loves.

This is a "lifer" for me.

Dot-Tailed Whiteface Dragonfly: Immature Perched On Grass Blade in Minnekhada Regional Park at Coquitlam BC 07Jun2014\

An unusual abundance of Dot-tailed Whitefaces (Leucorrhinia intacta) livened the shores of the ponds at Minnekhada Regional Park. In five years of visiting the park, I have not witnessed such a dense swarm of dragonflies. Indeed, the Lower Mainland has been visited by several waves of insect swarms, from caterpillars to the predators that feed upon them. One is inclined to look at a climatic reason: Perhaps the population explosions are somehow related to the potential developing El Nino. In any event, it is interesting.

The dragonfly in the image has freshly emerged from its final moult. With the wings folded together straight above the back like this, the animal is still in the process of allowing the foils to harden.

Anax imperator - Emperor dragonfly

A female Emperor dragonfly (also known as Blue Emperor) standing on my fingers.I felt so privileged!...
Northern Greece, Mt Olympus.

The Emperor Dragonfly or Blue Emperor, Anax imperator, is a large species of hawker dragonfly of the family Aeshnidae, averaging 78 millimetres (3.1 in) in length. It is found mainly in Europe and nearby Africa and Asia.
Male in side view

Males have a sky blue abdomen marked with a diagnostic black dorsal stripe and an apple green thorax. Females have a green thorax and abdomen. The male is highly territorial, and difficult to approach. The species lives by larger ponds, gravel pits, and slow rivers.

The dragonfly is in Europe. They frequently fly high up into the sky in search of prey, which includes butterflies, Four-spotted Chasers and tadpoles; small prey is eaten while flying. The females lay the eggs into plants such as pondweed, and always lay alone.(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor_%28dragonfly%29)

Emperor Dragonfly,the Big Guy . Explored 10.8.12

At last a male Emperor Dragonfly, anax imperator, the giant of UK Dragonflies. They ,like all dragonflies, are mainly insectivores and take prey up to the size of Chaser dragonflies.

Technically not a good photograph but I just wanted to capture this beauty, they seldom land so it was very much a case of point and shoot !
