Waves crushing against the Nazaré Promontory.

The Nazaré Canyon is an undersea Canyon, reaching 5.000 m deep, that allow ocean waves to reach the shore at Praia do Norte virtually without energy loss, which means that the waves found here are at any time larger than in any other place in Portugal. For this reason, Nazaré has a significant role in the surfing agenda, particularly for Big Wave Surfers and for those, either fans or just curious, that gather along the shoreline to watch them defying those giant waves.

On the Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo, many gather to see big wave surfers.

The amazing rocky formation and the beautiful turquoise waters just north from Cape Roca.

Being a natural barrier to the wind, this is a location particularly prone to the Föhn Effect, here seen as clouds over the top of the Cape as well as over the sea to the south.

Pedra da Ursa's crag and the shallow turquoise waters are lit by the morning sun, while a vast portion of the surrounding cliffs are still in the shadow.

Rear leading (range) light in Olhão. The hut housing the light can be seen next to the tower.

Descriptions of this light say it is on the main parish church (igreja matriz) in Fuseta but not exactly where it is on the church. The most likely location is in the small turret above the clock.

Modern descriptions of the rear leading (range) light in Olhão do not indicate clearly where it is located on the town's main church. However, a 1940s French list describes it as a masonry hut next to the tower.

Photo dated 1926. On the reverse, the photographer (Antonio Tomaz) dedicates the photo to Jose Joaquim Peres, "dignicimo (sic) engenheiro e amigo" (illustrious engineer and friend), but does not identify the 13 people on the picture.

In 1957-58, a volcanic eruption lasting 13 months took place near the lighthouse, with several hundred "seismic events" being recorded during that period.
