Another duck we only see in the winter season. They were the 2nd kind of winter duck to show up, blue-winged teal were first. There was a male too but he didn't pose like she did.

I could see movement back there & finally they came out of hiding. A pretty pair of wigeons. It is duck mating season & they are starting to pair up.

The female of the pair was swimming just a little behind the male. I had to wait for them to get enough separation to capture them solo. The light where she was added some silver highlights to the golden.

Here are both the male and female together. At this angle the light is no longer golden and you cannot see the iridescence on the male's head.

I was very lucky in being able to get a good photo of the female too, especially with this being a new species for me. The females were more shy, I didn't get as many shots of them. One finally swam into the sunlight. The female does not have the white stripe on top of the head or the green on the head. Her under the tail area is speckled, not black like the male. Click on the right arrow to see the male for comparison.
