One more time I asked her to turn around and pose for me. She lowered her wing, tucked one foot out of sight and turned to see if I liked that pose any better. I gave up after this shot.

I love winter ducks. Many of them have already migrated away from DFW. The shovelers stay here a bit longer than other species. They are starting to pair up & are in beautiful breeding colors. They will leave before nesting unfortunately. Enjoy them while you can.

I guess that one female is standing guard while everyone else snoozes in the sun.

Two more ducks show up to join the pinwheel and it starts getting a bit more disorganized.

Shovelers will feed in a group where they circle faster and faster in a pinwheel. This is done in shallow water and it creates a vortex that brings up food from the bottom so all can eat. This was a small group of 4. Two males in breeding colors, one male in eclipse plumage and one female.

This pair of shovelers were chilling on the banks and looked like an old married couple. She was trying to nap & keep an eye on him at the same time

Because why should the drakes get all the love? I think she is lovely.

The wind died down and the ducks held still long enough for me to get a fairly decent reflection shot. What a good looking couple.

They are demonstrating how they use those unique bills. They swim forward in the water with their bill plowing thru like a bulldozer (see her). The bill has comb-like teeth lining the outside edges and the water sluices thru these and filter tiny aquatic creatures and seeds. The teeth are called lamellae.

These are obviously very important geese. Their escort of shovelers are hard at work sweeping for underwater mines.

When cold fronts start coming thru, winter birds will return, like this female shoveler. No one has a bill like a shoveler, can't miss them.
