More Relaxed

Baby got bored with us quickly & went back to looking around at everything other than us. And mom looked like she was going back to sleep. Of course, still had one eye on us. This behavior lets you know that you have stayed far enough back from a nest. Highly cropped shot.

Cute Baby!

After stumbling onto the owl nest, we stayed away for a month, then went back. Spied an adorable little cutie peeking back at us. Highly cropped shot taken from a good distance but mom & baby both spotted us anyway.

Side View Of Mama Owl

When we left, we went a different way that gave us a side view. This is a highly cropped shot, we were a good distance away & she kept snoozing.

Well Hidden Owl by Kaptured by Kala

Well Hidden Owl

Much earlier this year, a friend & I made this discovery. Up high and hidden unless you were at the perfect angle to see the ears silhouetted. We were lucky to be in that spot & my friend just happened to be looking up & in the right direction. We had walked below her & never noticed. Apparently, there is a bit of a shallow depression up there that she chose for her nesting place. She never moved a single feather so indications are she is brooding unhatched eggs. We took a few quick shots then left her in peace. And sat on our photos until we were sure the nest was no longer occupied.

Papa Great Horned Owl

First of all, this is a highly cropped shot. But I got the message. This is my last shot, moved on & left them alone.

Mama Great Horned Owl

Isn't she beautiful? She is larger than the male. She has some cinnamon on her breast and her face is more colorful than he. He is mainly gray all over.

Female on the left, male on the right. They are really hard to spot. I have lightened up this photo quite a bit so you can see them.

Look This Way Please

This is the last shot I kept & processed from Screech Owl Nesting Season 2024. I still can't get over how goofy looking Frick turned out to be. Apparently, he was a good provider since they successfully raised & fledged babies. I hope they return next season.

One Last Portrait Shot Of Frack

I was looking for her in one spot when something made me look up & she was literally right over my head. I moved out of the danger zone & took this shot. She was busy watching a squirrel.

Mama's Turn To Stand Watch

It seems like each day post fledging; I will see either Frick or Frack in the nest tree but never a baby. I'm just happy to still be seeing owls.

Frack Watching A Squirrel

The squirrel was coming up the branch in her direction & she was watching intently. When the squirrel finally saw her, it reversed direction immediately.

Sleepy Frack Keeps Half An Eye On The Nest Box

Always at least one parent in the nest box tree where they have a direct line of sight to the box with babies. Very protective parents. Babies are starting to peek out in the daytime now but only the top of their head down to the top of the beak so far. Curious but not bold yet.

Talk about your grumpy old man. I can think of several actors he reminds me of. Frick definitely married up.

Awww, Frack Is Nibbling On Frick's Ear Tuft

This is the first time I've seen both parents together, outside of the box. Caught them canoodling. Apparently Frack is very affectionate, it is always her preening him (have seen it on some videos in the front yard box.) She was grabbing his ear feathers at their base and preening up to the tip before letting go and getting another feather.

Apparently, Frack does not appreciate having her preening session interrupted.

Frack When A Blue Jay Yelled At Her

I don't think she cared for the blue jay disturbing her nap. Those are some big eyes. That blue jay better sleep with one eye open tonight.
